Serving an average of 80,000 passengers per year, Burnie Airport, also called the Wynyard Airport, ranks 47th in the list of airports with most revenue passengers for the 2009-2010 financial year. Dubbed as the key gateway of the Tasmanian wilderness, this airport is run by Burnie Airport Corporation Pty Ltd.


Burnie Airport operates with two runways. The main runway, 09/27, is made with asphalt and has a length measurement of 1,650m. The other runway, 05/23, also surfaced with asphalt, measures 827m long.


The airport has only one terminal. And since it serves the whole of Tasmania, which is a known tourist spot, this terminal was upgraded in response to the increasing passenger demand. This newly-upgraded terminal, which was officially opened in 2006, is being used by the Regional Express to process the check-in, arrival, and departure of its passengers.

Regional Express provides four flights to Melbourne every day. On the other hand, interstate travels going to Hobart and King Island are offered by Tasair. Virgin Blue flights to and from Tasmania is said to be wooed by the council of Burnie, in competition with the council of Devonport.
