Being the only commercial airport in the southeastern part of South Australia, Mount Gambier Airfield has served no less than 60,000 passengers per year since 2000. The District Council of Grant has owned and operated the airport since the 1st day of July 1989.
Runways
The airport uses three runways for its operations—18/38, 11/29, and 06/24. The first one measure 1,524m in length, the second one, 922 meters, and the third one, 856 meters. All three of them have asphalt surface.
Terminal
Mount Gambier airport has one terminal, which is complete with all basic facilities and amenities. It will soon undergo an upgrade, as part of 15-year strategic plan for the airport.
Flights and Destinations
When O'connor Airlines is still operating in the airport, Midura was included in the list of flight destinations. However, when it stopped its operation, Regional Express, which only offers flights to Adelaide and Melbourne, was left as the only airline to service flights in Mount Gambier.
Such situation was given a solution by the council through the $3.2-million program intended for upgrading the main runway and other facilities in order to accommodate larger aircraft, more passengers, airlines, and flights. Currently, Virgin Australia and QantasLink had expressed their plans of servicing the regional area, including Mount Gamber Airport.
Transport To and From the Airport
Cars and taxis are the most convenient ways to travel to and from the airport. Car rental companies such as Hertz and Avis offer a wide array of options ranging from economical cars to the luxurious limousines. 8-seaters, 4WD's, and commercial vehicles are also available for rental. Subway and railway transportations are not yet available, but will be soon.
