Mount Isa Airport is the main airport that serves the city of Mount Isa in Queensland. In 2009-2010, the airport served nearly 200,000 passengers - an increase of 0.2% from the previous year. At present, it is owned and operated by the Queensland Airports Limited.

History

The airport had its beginnings 1922, when an aerodome was built on the south of the city center of Mount Isa. Twenty years later, it was relocated to its present site, to give way for the expansion of the town and its mining operations. Mount Isa Airport during those times was serviced by light aircrafts only.

In the 1970s, due to the growing passenger traffic, the airport underwent renovations which included the construction of a taxiway and apron, and expansion of the terminal building. Strengthening of the runways was also done, so it will be able to handle larger and heavier aircrafts, such as a Boeing-727. Up to now, the airport is still undergoing a series of renovations to further improve its service to the passengers, most of which are business travelers.

Runways

The airport has one runway, 16/34, made of asphalt. It measures 2,560m in length.

Terminals

The airport currently has one terminal building, which was constructed way back in 1969. In 2000, it was extensively renovated to accommodate the growing number of passengers.

Flights and Destinations

Mount Isa Airport is being serviced by some of Australia's largest regional airlines such as Airnorth, Qantas and QantasLink, Regional Express Airlines, Skytrans Airlines, and West Wing Aviation. These airlines provide flights to the different cities and regions of Australia, most especially to Brisbane, Cairns, and Townsville.

Transport To and From the Airport

The airport is accessible through cars and taxis. For private vehicles, the airport has 24-hour car parks that offer long-term, short-term, and prepaid parking. Taxis are also available in front of the terminal building. Car rental services are provided by companies such as Avis, Budget, Four Wheel Drive, and Hertz. They have service desks at the terminal, and also pick-up and drop-off facilities at the airport.
