Qantas to Wear Retro Roo Livery Again in November

19th Oct 2015

The second Qantas 'Retro Roo' jet will take to the skies in November this year, Australian carrier revealed today. The plane, a Boeing 737-800, will feature one of 12 liveries that Qantas has donned since 1920.

The company hopes this will inspire a 'new wave of Australian aviation nostalgia'.

Qantas also revealed it will pick one of its 67 Boeing 737-800s to go retro, and then send it to Townsville for a 14-day repainting before it unveils the new/old livery at a staff event on 16th November, 2015 at its jet base hangar in Sydney.

In a statement about 'Retro Roo 2', Olivia Wirth, Qantas Group executive for brand, marketing and corporate affairs said:

"We are very excited to be announcing the commissioning of Retro Roo 2 following the phenomenal response we received from the community and our people when we introduced the first Retro Roo with its classic 1970s iconic last November."

She continued:

"You can see from what's posted on social media that people enjoy taking photos of Retro Roo 1 as it travels to airports around Australia. Crew tells us it's always a talking point when it pulls up to the gate and people get on board, though they're generally pleased that it's not 1974 on the inside as well."

Qantas already has one retro-jet in its fleet and it's a must-see and must-fly among travelers and aviation aficionados. The VH-XZP arrived last November from Boeing's factory in Seattle, wearing the ochre colour of the carrier's 1970s and 1980s days.

The airline used its first Retro Roo plane for return flights between Perth and Singapore in June. Later it had the aircraft on display at Avalon Airshow in February this year.
