Hamilton Island Airport (HTI) is the airport on Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays, Queensland, at 1 Airport Drive. It is a five-minute trip from the island's resort accommodation, shops and restaurants. Hamilton Island's own airport pages also call it the Great Barrier Reef Airport.

Qantas and Virgin Australia are recorded flying direct to Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. Hotel guests are met at the baggage collection area, the island is car-free, and Cruise Whitsundays ferries use a jetty at the airport. The airport closes at 4pm each day, and guests are asked to leave the terminal building then.

The terminal at Hamilton Island Airport

Hamilton Island Airport has one terminal, and the check-in hall is a few metres from it. The departure terminal has passenger seating, and there is an airport bar for drinks and a shop selling snacks and magazines.

Check-in at Hamilton Island Airport

The Qantas and Virgin Australia check-in desks are immediately inside the check-in hall, at the western end of the terminal. Queues can be long in peak travelling periods, so join the correct queue for your airline. Check-in opening and closing times vary by airline, so confirm them with your airline before you go to the airport.

Security screening at Hamilton Island Airport

Checked bag screening is in operation at Hamilton Island Airport under the Aviation Transport Security Act 2004 and the Aviation Transport Security Regulations 2005. Hamilton Island Airport is a security controlled airport, and its security measures include the screening of aircraft crew and passengers. Security screening is compulsory for anyone entering the secure area of an Australian airport terminal, and each airport has its own screening procedures that meet the government's requirements.

For prohibited and allowable items, contact the airline you are flying with, or see the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) website on dangerous goods. You may take a camera into the departures lounge, but photos may not be taken of check-in counters, check-in staff, security procedures or security staff.

Wifi, money and lockers at Hamilton Island Airport

Free wifi covers the terminal building and its surroundings. There are no automatic teller machines (ATMs) or other cash withdrawal facilities at the airport, but payments can be made fee free by inserting your card and choosing a cheque or savings account. Hamilton Island operates a cashless environment, unless legislated otherwise.

The airport FAQ says cash deposits and withdrawals are available through Bank@Post at the Australia Post office on Front Street, which also sells prepaid and reloadable Mastercards. Storage lockers are available for hire outside the main departure terminal, next to Hamilton Island Holiday Homes. There are no shower facilities at the airport.

Accessibility and families at Hamilton Island Airport

The terminal has a parents' room for passengers travelling with children, and separate bathroom facilities and ramp access for passengers with a disability. A terminal plan and a disability access facilitation plan are published on the airport's terminal information page.

The lounge at Hamilton Island Airport

The airport lounge, called HI Lounge, is now exclusive to guests of qualia, Beach Club and The Sundays.

Closing time at Hamilton Island Airport

The airport closes at 4pm every day, though the hours may be extended due to delays. For security reasons, guests are asked to leave the terminal building at closing time. Cruise Whitsundays passengers waiting for their vessel are welcome to wait in the airport's shaded courtyard.

Flight information and lost property at Hamilton Island Airport

The airport's Arrivals and Departures webpage carries the most recent flight information. Items left in the terminal are reported through the airport's Lost Property form, while items forgotten on an aircraft are the airline's responsibility.

Holiday home guests drive their buggy back to the airport and visit the staff at the Hamilton Island Holiday Homes office before they fly.

Getting around Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island is car-free. The island runs a complimentary Island Shuttle for island guests with no booking required: the Green Shuttle runs between the Resort Centre and the Marina Village, and the Blue Shuttle loops around the island. The Hamilton Island app has a live feed of the shuttles, and operating hours are subject to change.

Buggies can be hired, but bookings are essential and subject to availability, and some dates are booked out months in advance. The minimum rental period is 4 hours, and you need a valid driver's licence and a credit card for the security deposit. Authorised drivers must be at least 21 and hold a current provisional driver's licence or above, and a buggy carries a maximum of 4 people.

Recreational and sport drone use is not permitted on Hamilton Island or Dent Island, or in the waters surrounding Hamilton Island, Dent Island and Henning Island.

Ferries at the Hamilton Island Airport jetty

Cruise Whitsundays runs Resort Connections, an island transfer network linking Port of Airlie, Hamilton Island Marina, Hamilton Island Airport, Daydream Island and Shute Harbour, with selected airport coach connections via Whitsunday Coast Airport (PPP). Its vessels use the jetty at the airport, 100 metres from the airline check-in desks. Travel to and from the airport jetty is strictly for passengers connecting with flights.

Porters move your luggage between the terminal and the vessel, and at Port of Airlie you collect it from the designated drop-off point. Most Airlie Beach accommodation is within easy walking distance of Port of Airlie. Coach connections via Whitsunday Coast Airport must be booked at least 12 hours in advance.

Cruise Whitsundays says final boarding is 5 minutes before departure, after which the vessel gangways are removed. Each vessel carries a maximum number of guests, so book transfers before the day of travel, particularly airport transfers, or you may be asked to take the next available ferry. Luggage for the luggage service must be checked in 15 minutes before departure and is limited to one large suitcase and one small piece per person.

Guests who need special assistance should tell Cruise Whitsundays Reservations before booking. Timetables and fares are on the Cruise Whitsundays island transfers page.

Moving plants or soil into Queensland

Queensland's biosecurity laws restrict moving certain plant material, soil and related equipment into the state. Business Queensland says that generally, moving these items into Queensland needs a biosecurity certificate, applied for through the local department of agriculture or primary industries in your own state or territory.

Business Queensland lists restrictions on moving some plants, plant products and soil into Queensland. Some apply to items from a named state, such as Victoria, and others name no state. Check Business Queensland's list of restrictions before moving plants, plant products or soil into Queensland.

Weather and the cyclone season at Hamilton Island

The Queensland Government says Queensland's cyclone season officially runs from 1 November to 30 April, though cyclones can occur at other times. Hamilton Island keeps a Weather Watch page that is updated when there are changes to share, and it points guests to the Bureau of Meteorology for forecasts and official warnings and to the Whitsunday Regional Council Disaster Dashboard.
