Rex (Regional Express) is a regional airline that sells its flights under the airline code ZL. It links regional airports with Sydney Airport (SYD), Melbourne Airport (MEL), Brisbane Airport (BNE), Adelaide Airport (ADL) and Perth Airport (PER), and also flies regional routes from Cairns Airport (CNS) and Townsville Airport (TSV) and between regional airports.

Rex's baggage page states its allowances for regional services operated by the Saab 340 turboprop. Rex's fare rules also say that selected services are carried by another operator, so check the operator shown on your booking.

Rex terminals at Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Cairns and Townsville

Rex's terminal page lists Sydney Airport for Sydney and Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine for Melbourne.

Sydney Airport: Terminal 3 for departures and Terminal 2 for arrivals at present

At Sydney Airport, Rex check-in is on the Departures Level of Terminal 3, with self-service kiosks, and regional Rex flights leave from Terminal 3. Arriving regional flights come into Terminal 2 at ground level: passengers are collected from the aircraft by a tarmac transfer bus, and bags arrive on the Terminal 2 carousels on the ground level.

Sydney Airport's own Terminal 2 upgrade page calls the move of Rex departures to Terminal 3 temporary, because of construction. It gives the Terminal 2 redevelopment, under way since 1 May 2025, a completion target of the end of 2026.

Melbourne Airport: Terminal 4

At Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine), Rex uses Terminal 4, and Melbourne Airport's own Terminal 4 guide lists Rex there too. Check-in is on the ground level at the southern end of Terminal 4, with a full check-in service, kiosks and bag drop. Arriving passengers come through the Terminal 4 arrivals corridor on the ground level, south of the baggage claim.

Brisbane Airport: the Domestic Terminal

At Brisbane Airport, Rex check-in is in the Southern Check-in Hall of the Domestic Terminal, which Rex's page calls Terminal 2. For the departure gate, Rex's page says to check the flight information screens.

Adelaide Airport

Rex's page puts its Adelaide flights in Terminal 1, with check-in in the northern check-in area, plus kiosks and bag drop. Adelaide Airport's own check-in page places all airline check-in desks on level 2 of the terminal. Arriving passengers are collected from the aircraft by bus and taken to the northern end of the terminal.

Perth Airport: Terminal 2

Rex says it operates all its Perth Airport services from Terminal 2. Check-in desks are on the ground level of the domestic Terminal 2, and arrivals come in on the same level.

Cairns Airport and Townsville Airport

At Cairns Airport, Rex check-in is on the ground level of the domestic Terminal 2, and arrivals come in on the same level. At Townsville Airport, Rex check-in is on the Departures Level of the terminal.

Rex Lounges

Rex's lounge page lists Rex Lounges at Sydney Airport (one in Terminal 3 and one in Terminal 2), Melbourne Airport (Terminal 4) and Adelaide Airport. Entry is for lounge members and Rex Flyer Diamond members, and Rex also offers casual lounge access. Lounge opening hours are subject to change.

Rex fare types: what Saver and Flex include

Rex's fare rules set out the change and cancellation conditions for each fare. The Saver and Flex conditions are below; where a change carries a fee, the fare rules page gives it.

ConditionSaverFlex
Change of date or timePermitted more than 14 days before scheduled departure; a fee applies to later changes; no changes from midnight before the scheduled date of departurePermitted until 60 minutes before scheduled departure
Name changePermitted, with a feePermitted until 60 minutes before scheduled departure
CancellationNon-refundable; credit to Travel Bank, with a fee, if cancelled before midnight before scheduled departurePermitted until 60 minutes before scheduled departure, as Travel Bank credit or as a refund with a fee

Flex has Get Me Home, a transfer to an earlier flight on the same date, subject to seat availability, and Flex passengers may be waitlisted in full economy class. Extra-legroom seats, which Rex calls Rextra Legroom, are sold subject to availability, online, through web check-in or through manage booking. A Rextra Legroom seat in an emergency exit row comes with safety conditions.

Checking in for a Rex flight

Rex's check-in page says web check-in opens 48 hours before departure and closes 60 minutes before it. With carry-on bags only, you can go to the gate with a printed or digital boarding pass; with checked bags, you drop them at the check-in desk or a self-serve bag drop.

Rex's fare rules say check-in closes 30 minutes before scheduled departure at most airports. Rex's check-in page recommends presenting bags 60 minutes before departure at regional airports, and says the boarding gate closes 15 minutes before departure at regional airports and 20 minutes before at capital-city airports, Cairns and Townsville. Under Rex's check-in rules, a passenger not ready for boarding by the time the boarding gate closes is excluded from the flight and forfeits the fare.

Online and kiosk check-in are not available to passengers carrying breathing aids or to unaccompanied minors, and passengers with special requirements must check in at the airport.

Identification for Rex flights

Rex's Travel Requirements page says passengers aged 18 and over must present acceptable identification, and the name must match the booking. Its examples of photo identification include a passport and a driver's licence, an electronic copy on a device is accepted, and a passenger with no photo identification must provide two forms of non-photographic identification. Passengers aged 17 or under need no identification when travelling with, or presented by, an identifiable guardian.

Children travelling alone on Rex

Children aged 5 to 11 travelling alone must travel as unaccompanied minors unless they are with a parent or guardian aged 15 or over, and children aged 12 to 14 may request the service. Children under 5 must travel with an adult aged 15 or over. Unaccompanied minors check in at the airport, the adult sending them stays until departure, and Rex says the number on each flight is limited by law.

Special requirements and animals

Rex asks for special requirements to be notified at least 48 hours before the planned departure, when booking or on 13 17 13. Under Rex's Conditions of Carriage, live domestic animals are accepted as excess baggage on flights operated by the Saab 340, except to or from Adelaide, Townsville, Brisbane, Perth or Cairns, where they go through an accepted freight agent. Rex no longer accepts snub-nosed dogs as baggage or freight.

Rex baggage allowance

Rex currently allows 7 kg of carry-on baggage for all passengers on its regional routes, on every fare. Checked baggage is currently 15 kg on Promo and Saver fares and 23 kg on Flex fares, as Rex's baggage page, which states its allowances for services operated by the Saab 340, and its Conditions of Carriage read in October 2026. Rex Flyer Diamond members have an additional checked baggage allowance, and the figures can change, so check them with Rex before you fly.

A carry-on bag on a regional flight can measure up to 48 cm long, 34 cm high and 23 cm deep, with total linear dimensions of no more than 105 cm, and Rex may weigh and measure it. A checked bag can be up to 140 cm in total linear dimensions, and Rex does not accept a single item over 32 kg. An infant not in a seat is allowed two pieces up to 10 kg combined.

When a Rex bag is over the limit

Carry-on found over the limit at the gate is taken off, treated as checked baggage, and Rex's baggage page says it will "only be uplifted on the next available flight". Excess checked baggage is subject to space and uplift availability, and Rex may offload checked baggage when the aircraft is weight-restricted.

Rex Flyer points and status

Rex Flyer is Rex's loyalty programme, with Opal, Sapphire, Emerald and Diamond tiers; tier status comes from Status Points or eligible flights. Rex lists priority check-in, baggage and boarding for the Emerald tier, and lounge access and an additional checked baggage allowance for Diamond.

Rex's Rex Flyer page said in October 2026 that using Rex Points for redemption is currently unavailable. Members continue to earn Rex Points as usual.

Flying with Rex into Tasmania or South Australia

Rex's Melbourne to King Island and Melbourne to Burnie flights land in Tasmania, where Biosecurity Tasmania, part of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, sets the rules. Its traveller's guide lists fresh fruit and vegetables, including potatoes, fresh herbs, garlic, ginger and onion, as not permitted entry, and biosecurity matter must be declared to a Biosecurity Officer on arrival or put in a marked biosecurity disposal bin. Outdoor gear must be checked, cleaned and dried, and dogs need treatment for hydatid tapeworm within the 14 days before entry.

Rex's own King Island page asks travellers not to bring fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, animal products, plant material, soil or seeds.

The Melbourne to Mount Gambier route crosses from Victoria into South Australia, which restricts some fruit, vegetables, plants and plant products brought in from interstate to protect its horticulture from fruit fly and other pests and diseases. South Australia's rules say fruit and vegetables at risk from fruit fly must be eaten or disposed of before entering the state, and what may be brought in differs by the state you travel from. South Australia's Fruit Fly Hotline is 1300 666 010.

Rex's May 2026 route changes

Rex's release of 22 May 2026 said the Melbourne to King Island and Melbourne to Burnie routes would be separated from 20 June 2026 and that Melbourne to Mildura services would be reduced from 22 June 2026. Rex linked the changes to fuel prices and a challenging operating environment, and said passengers affected by them would be supported.

Rex aircraft and who operates the flight

Rex's baggage page states its allowances for regional services operated by the Saab 340. Rex's fleet page lists the Saab 340 with two General Electric CT7 turboprops and a fully pressurised cabin, and Rex's Disability Access Facilitation Plan describes it as a single-aisle aircraft with one seat on the left of the aisle and two on the right and a single toilet, and refers to the aircraft stairs.

Rex's fare rules say carriage on selected services is provided by another operator. The operator is shown on the booking.

Who owns Rex

Rex's website describes Rex as a wholly owned subsidiary of Air T, Inc. Air T describes itself, in its October 2025 FAQ, as an aviation holding company headquartered in Minneapolis. Air T entered a sale agreement with Rex's administrators in October 2025, and announced the closing of the acquisition on 18 December 2025.

Rex says that in December 2025 the Federal Court of Australia approved a Deed of Company Arrangement that severed its ties with the previous Rex business, including its directors and administrators, and that it has operated under Air T's ownership since 18 December 2025. It also says it is headquartered in Sydney.

Contacting Rex

Rex's Customer Contact Centre takes booking enquiries on 13 17 13 within Australia, and on +61 2 6393 5550 from outside Australia. Rex also runs online chat on weekdays, and Rex Flyer and lounge enquiries go to the same 13 17 13 number.
