Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD), which its operator calls Sydney Airport, is 8 km from the Sydney central business district (CBD). It has three terminals: Terminal 1 (T1) for international flights, and Terminal 2 (T2) and Terminal 3 (T3) for domestic flights. You cannot walk between T1 and the domestic terminals, so check which terminal your booking uses before you set out.
Terminal hours are T1 International from 3am to 11pm, and T2 and T3 Domestic from 4am to 11pm. None of the three is listed as open around the clock, so check the hours before planning a late-night or overnight wait at the airport.
The operator's T2 upgrades page says the rebuild of T2 has moved Rex and FlyPelican departures to T3, while their arrivals stay in T2. As of September 2026, that page places the domestic airlines like this:
| Airline | Domestic terminal at Sydney Airport |
|---|---|
| Jetstar | T2 |
| Virgin Australia | T2 |
| Qantas | T3, departures and arrivals |
| Rex | Departures from T3 during the T2 works (temporary); arrivals in T2 |
| FlyPelican | Departures from T3 during the T2 works (temporary); arrivals in T2 |
That page gives limited check-in hall space during construction as the reason Rex and FlyPelican departures moved to T3. Skytrans, which flies to Lord Howe Island, says it will operate all its Sydney departures and arrivals from T3, the Qantas domestic terminal. For Link Airways and Alliance Airlines, take the terminal from your booking or from the airline before you travel.
Major construction on the T2 redevelopment began on 1 May 2025, and the target for completion is the end of 2026. The Rex and FlyPelican moves are tied to the works, so the arrangement may change again once they finish.
Walking between T1 and the domestic terminals is not possible. A free terminal transfer bus runs between T1 Arrivals Hall B and the arrivals levels of T2 and T3, takes about 10 minutes, and is listed as running from 5:30am to 10:30pm.
The other quick option is the Airport Link train between International Airport station and Domestic Airport station, which takes about 2 minutes and runs from 5am to midnight, but it charges a fare. Taxis and rideshare also serve each terminal, and bus Route 420 is another way between the terminals.
T2 and T3 are close enough to walk: a pedestrian path through the P1 car park takes about 5 minutes. Transfer routes go through the arrivals and departures areas, so ask your airline for the best option for your connection.
The operator advises arriving one hour before departure if you have hand luggage only, or two hours if you are checking in bags. For check-in closing times, check with your airline.
The operator's screening rules put no restriction on liquids, aerosols, gels and powders in cabin baggage on domestic flights, unless the flight leaves from T1 International, where the international limits apply. Everyone is screened, children included, and prams and strollers are screened separately.
The Virgin Australia Lounge is past security on the departures level, and the Rex Lounge is at Gate G2, also beyond security. Rex also lists a lounge at Gate 16 in T3, where its departures are during the works.
T2 has free Wi-Fi, information desks open from 5am to 10pm, and an Amcal pharmacy open from 6am to 9pm daily. There is a multi-faith room at Gate 55, parents' rooms and baby change on more than one level, and a Changing Places accessible bathroom after security near the shops. Travelex currency exchange and cash machines are also in the terminal.
Airport Link trains stop at International Airport station, reached from the T1 arrivals level past Arrivals Hall A, and at the domestic stations for T2 and T3. City stations on the line include Central, Museum, St James, Circular Quay, Wynyard and Town Hall. You can pay with an Opal card or a contactless American Express, Visa or Mastercard.
Sydney Buses Route 420 serves the airport, running between Mascot and Burwood and through the T1 International and T2/T3 Domestic terminals, with stops on the Arrivals level outside each terminal. The DART Express Shuttle runs daily from T1 International to CBD stops at Central, Hyde Park, Kings Cross, Darling Harbour and The Rocks.
Taxi ranks are at the front of each terminal, and rideshare drivers meet passengers at a priority pick-up area. Car rental desks, including Hertz, Europcar, Budget, Thrifty and Enterprise, are on the arrivals level at T1 and at T2 and T3. Undercover bicycle racks are at T1 and in the T2 and T3 precinct.
Parking includes the P2 and P3 car parks at the domestic terminals and P7 at the international terminal, plus Blu Emu, an off-airport car park with a shuttle. Valet options include Qantas Valet at the domestic terminals, T2 Premium Valet, T1 Premium Valet, FastPark Valet and P7 SYD Valet. Accessible, business and motorcycle parking is offered at both the domestic and international terminals, and parking can be booked online in advance.
Airlines recorded on direct domestic flights from Sydney Airport are Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin Australia, Rex, Link Airways, Alliance Airlines, FlyPelican and Skytrans. Routes change, so confirm with the airline before you book.

Several destinations from Sydney have their own biosecurity rules for travellers arriving from elsewhere in Australia. Each state or island body sets its own conditions, so a rule for one does not carry over to another.
Biosecurity Tasmania does not permit fresh fruit and vegetables, including potatoes, fresh herbs, garlic, ginger and onion, and it prohibits abalone and abalone products. Unfiltered honey and honeycomb are prohibited unless they are from Tasmania and in the original sealed packaging, and raw nuts and seeds containing green material are prohibited too.
Commercially processed food is allowed if it is identifiable and free of contamination, as are fruit and vegetables that are cooked, baked, hard frozen, canned, preserved or commercially dried. Food items must be declared, and oysters from New South Wales face restrictions.
Western Australia (WA) requires quarantine risk material to be declared to a Quarantine Inspector on arrival, and Quarantine WA advises anyone in doubt to declare it or use the airport disposal bins. Inspectors with sniffer dogs may check baggage as it is collected from the carousel.
Most fresh produce must be free of sprouting green growth, soil, pests and disease, and only some items are permitted, such as pineapple, peeled and diced watermelon, carrots, and peeled onion and garlic. Hard-frozen produce is generally allowed except grapes, mangoes with seeds, unpeeled onions, unpeeled garlic and unpeeled potatoes, and fruit of the Myrtaceae family. Some high-risk plants, plant products and animals may not be allowed.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regions South Australia (PIRSA) says fruit and vegetables at risk from fruit fly must be eaten or disposed of before entering South Australia, and it describes a zero-tolerance policy that applies to all travellers. Its general list of prohibited items includes fresh fruit and fresh vegetables (with some exceptions, such as leafy vegetables from New South Wales), avocados, capsicum, chilli, eggplant, tomato, and soil.
The detail depends on the state you are travelling from, so check the New South Wales table on PIRSA's travelling to South Australia page. Many items are assessed case by case through the Fruit Fly Hotline on 1300 666 010.
The Lord Howe Island Board asks visitors to complete its visitor biosecurity checklist before travelling, and to follow walking track hygiene protocols on the island.
Western Sydney International (WSI) is due to open to passengers on 25 October 2026. Once it opens, check which Sydney airport your ticket names before you travel.
No. Use the free terminal transfer bus, which takes about 10 minutes, or the Airport Link train, which takes about 2 minutes and charges a fare. T2 and T3 are about a 5-minute walk apart through the P1 car park.
Qantas domestic flights use T3 for both departures and arrivals, according to the airport operator.
During the T2 works, Rex departures are temporarily in T3 and Rex arrivals remain in T2, according to the airport operator, and FlyPelican has the same arrangement. The move is tied to construction with a completion target of the end of 2026, so check with Rex before you fly.
The operator's screening rules put no restriction on liquids, aerosols, gels and powders in cabin baggage on domestic flights. The exception is a domestic flight leaving from T1 International, where the international limits apply.
The operator advises one hour before departure with hand luggage only, and two hours if you are checking in bags. Check your airline's check-in closing time as well.
