Karratha Airport (KTA) is owned and run by the City of Karratha, in the Pilbara in Western Australia (WA). The City of Karratha's infrastructure page describes it as the busiest airport in the Pilbara and the second busiest in Western Australia, by passenger numbers and aircraft movements.

In its 2023 submission to the Australian Government's Aviation Green Paper, the City said the airport directly serves towns within a 60-minute drive as well as a fly-in fly-out workforce, with Perth as the primary origin and destination. This site's schedule records show direct domestic flights from Karratha Airport to Perth, with Qantas and Virgin Australia.

The terminal at Karratha Airport

The operator says Karratha Airport has one main passenger terminal, with all airlines operating from it. The new and expanded terminal opened on 25 October 2015.

The terminal has a check-in area, an arrivals area with the baggage carousel, and a departure lounge. Luggage tags are available at the check-in counters, and unattended baggage is treated as suspicious and as a security threat. Check the airline for check-in times and baggage rules; the operator lists Qantas on 13 13 13 and Virgin Australia on 13 67 89.

The terminal opens a minimum of one hour before the first flight arrival of the day and closes one hour after the last flight departure. It is security controlled during closing hours, and no one is permitted to enter it during that time or to sleep in it overnight.

Bladed implements such as knives, letter openers, sharp scissors and tools are prohibited in hand luggage and should be packed in checked luggage. Items detected at screening points must be surrendered.

Facilities at Karratha Airport

Free WiFi is available throughout the airport, and free charging is in the middle of the departure lounge. The Bar @ Karratha, in the departure area, serves tap and bottled beer, packaged spirits, hot snacks, burgers and meals, and there are vending machines in all areas of the terminal. The LINK store sells newspapers, books, magazines, stationery, snacks and cold drinks, with a Tech2GO section for tech accessories.

Showers are in the accessible toilets near the check-in and arrivals areas, and all the accessible toilets have baby changing. The play area is in the departure area, and children there must be supervised. Trolleys are in the car parks and the arrivals area, and meeting rooms can be hired from the operator.

The operator describes the airport's facilities as accessible throughout, and the Disability Access Facilitation Plan can be downloaded from its Airport services page. Smoking is allowed only in the designated smoking huts in the short-term car park.

For property lost in the terminal or car park, contact the Airport Management Office on (08) 9186 8507 between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. Property left on board a flight is the airline's responsibility. Travelling animals can be collected and dropped off at the freight yard along Norman Road.

As of September 2026, the operator's parking pages say parking is ticketless: cameras read your number plate and the boom gate opens. If the cameras cannot read the plate, you are asked to tap a credit card on entry, and you then need to tap the same card on the way out. Booking is not required for any car park.

The pages also give the first 60 minutes free in the short-term car park at the front of the terminal. You can pay at the pay station by cash, credit card or Apple Pay, at the exit terminal by credit card, or through the Mobile Ticket app or a QR code. The intercom or help button connects you to a call centre that runs 24/7.

Oversize vehicles are not permitted in the short-term or long-term car parks without the airport manager's permission. Regular users can open a car parking account with the operator.

The Regional Airfare Zone Cap Scheme

Zone cap fares are only for residents of regional Western Australia outside Perth and Peel, for personal travel booked as a return fare from and back to the same regional destination, so someone who lives in Perth, Peel or outside Western Australia cannot use them.

The operator's page says the fares can be booked through Qantas, with a Qantas Frequent Flyer membership, and through Virgin Australia, with a Velocity Frequent Flyer membership, each free for eligible regional residents. The State's own details of the scheme are on the Transport WA zone cap page.
