Kingscote Airport (KGC) is on Kangaroo Island in South Australia, and Kangaroo Island Council operates it. The council's own airport page calls it the Kangaroo Island, Kingscote Airport. The South Australian Tourism Commission describes Kingscote as the largest town on Kangaroo Island, on Nepean Bay, and home to the island's airport.

This site's schedule data records direct flights from Kingscote to Adelaide with Qantas. Two details shape a trip through the airport: Kangaroo Island has its own biosecurity restrictions, with random checks at the airport, and the terminal opens before scheduled commercial flights and closes after them.

The terminal at Kingscote Airport

Kangaroo Island Council's airport page says the terminal is open seven days a week, opening before scheduled commercial flights and closing after them. The terminal area it lists has a cafe, public toilets, a water fountain, and visitor brochures and information screens.

The cafe is run by Kangaroo Island Providore. The council's page says it opens around scheduled flights and is closed on Sundays.

Security status and general screening rules

The council's airport page describes Kingscote as a security controlled airport, and Airservices Australia's aerodrome entry for the airport, issued in September 2026, says the same.

When an air service must be screened

This is the Commonwealth's general screening rule for air services. The Cyber and Infrastructure Security Centre says an air service that operates open charter or a regular public transport operation must be aviation security screened if it:

  • uses aircraft with a seating capacity of 40 or more persons
  • operates from an Australian designated, tier 1 or tier 2 security controlled airport
  • uses any aircraft departing from the same apron as a screened air service operating at a designated airport

Liquids, aerosols and gels

These are the Commonwealth's general rules for liquids, aerosols and gels. The Department of Home Affairs says each container must be 100 mL or 100 g or less, and all containers must fit in one transparent, resealable plastic bag. It lists these situations for the restrictions:

  • when departing Australia
  • when transiting through Australia from one country to another
  • when travelling on the domestic leg of a flight departing from an Australian international terminal
  • before boarding an inbound flight at its last point of departure before it reaches Australia

Getting to Kangaroo Island and from Kingscote Airport

Car hire

Hertz and Budget Rent-A-Car hire cars to passengers at the airport.

Kangaroo Island Transfers

The council's airport page says Kangaroo Island Transfers provides a passenger transport service on Kangaroo Island, including the airport, and meets all scheduled passenger flights.

Parking at Kingscote Airport

According to the council's airport page, short-term parking is free and overnight parking is charged, with the fee set in the council's Fees and Charges Schedule. The car park is divided into timed zones, and the zones with the shorter times are nearest the terminal entrance.

Reaching Kangaroo Island by ferry

Kangaroo Island can also be reached by sea. SeaLink runs a car and passenger ferry across the Backstairs Passage between Cape Jervis and Penneshaw, and says the trip takes 45 minutes.

New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory observe daylight saving, and Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not. Kangaroo Island is in South Australia.

Kangaroo Island biosecurity: what not to bring

South Australia's state biosecurity agency says legislation is in place to protect Kangaroo Island, including biosecurity restrictions. Its Kangaroo Island travel page asks visitors not to bring these types of items to the island:

  • Bees, honey or bee products. The agency lists bees, bee handling (apiary) equipment or appliances, hive materials, and honey, honeycomb or beeswax products.
  • Unwashed or seed potatoes. Washed or brushed potatoes for eating can be brought if they are in new, unopened packaging.
  • Declared animal and plant pests. The agency lists ferrets, foxes, rabbits, deer, goats and pigs, and declared weeds, including common garden plants such as gazania, olive, blackberry and arum lily.
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables at risk of fruit fly.

The agency says Ligurian honeybees are protected on the island and are vulnerable to introduced disease because of their isolation, and that potatoes may carry disease which could devastate the island's seed potato industry. Permits to keep domestic goats and pigs can be applied for through the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board.

Fruit fly and travel through an affected area

The agency says there are movement restrictions on some fruit and vegetables that come from high-risk interstate areas or pass through a declared fruit fly outbreak area in South Australia. If you are travelling via an affected area on the way to Kangaroo Island, it says to dispose of any produce that could spread pests and diseases.

Biosecurity checks and amnesty bins

Travellers to Kangaroo Island may encounter a random biosecurity check, and the agency's staff stationed at the Cape Jervis Ferry Terminal and Kingscote Airport look for restricted items. Amnesty bins are available at all entry points to Kangaroo Island for disposing of restricted items. Any items you are unsure about should go into the amnesty bins at the ferry terminal or at the airport, the agency advises.

Soil, boats and diving gear

Before travelling to the island, the agency asks you to check that vehicles and machinery, camping and other outdoor equipment, and hiking boots and clothes are free of soil. Boats and diving gear can carry marine pests, and the agency says they should be clean before they come to the island.

Flinders Chase National Park and Seal Bay

National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia says Flinders Chase National Park is 110 kilometres west of Kingscote, reached by the Playford and West End Highways or the South Coast Road. The park and the Ravine des Casoars Wilderness Protection Area include Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch and a long-nosed fur seal colony. The visitor centre, with The Rocks Cafe, is on South Coast Road 800 metres outside the park, and entry tickets can be bought online or at the visitor centre.

The parks service says Admirals Arch and Remarkable Rocks may be closed for public safety during a severe weather event with damaging winds. It also says pets are not allowed at Seal Bay or within any national park area on Kangaroo Island, car parks included, and drones are not permitted at Seal Bay or within any national park on the island.

After the 2019 to 2020 summer bushfires, the parks service says rebuilding of the visitor facilities at Remarkable Rocks is complete, with a new boardwalk, viewing platform and interpretive signage. It also says the 4.5-kilometre walking track along the Black Swamp and Rocky River has been rebuilt after the firestorm of 3 January 2020.

The parks service's Flinders Chase page says whales migrate from sub-Antarctic water to the South Australian coast to calve and mate between mid-May and late October.

Seal Bay and the Kangaroo Island Parks Pass

The parks service describes a wheelchair-accessible 900-metre return boardwalk through the dunes to viewing platforms overlooking the beach and the sea lion colony at Seal Bay. The parks service's Kangaroo Island Parks Pass gives unlimited entry to the island's parks, including Flinders Chase National Park, and access to attractions including the Seal Bay Experience tour and boardwalk and the Cape Borda and Cape Willoughby lightstations.

The airfield at Kingscote Airport

The council's airport page gives the aerodrome's location identifier as YKSC and says no fuel is available at the airport. The aerodrome entry notes concentrations of birds and wallabies in the vicinity of the aerodrome.
