Longreach Airport (LRE) is on the Landsborough Highway at Longreach, in Central Western Queensland, and the airport's own website puts it a few minutes from town. Queensland Airports Limited (QAL) has operated it since 2012 and acquired a 99-year lease over the airport from Longreach Regional Council in October 2012.

This site's schedule records show direct flights with Qantas to Brisbane and with Rex to Winton.

Where Longreach Airport is and who it serves

Longreach Airport is on the Landsborough Highway at Longreach, in Central Western Queensland, and the operator says it serves residents, visitors and local industries across Longreach, Winton and Barcaldine. Longreach Regional Council places its region 700 kilometres from the coast, west of Rockhampton, and names its townships as Ilfracombe, Isisford, Longreach and Yaraka.

The terminal at Longreach Airport

The terminal has an Arrivals area and a Departures area, with a Departures Lounge. The operator says the terminal opens in line with flight schedules, and that access may be restricted outside those times.

Check-in at Longreach Airport

Check-in counters are inside the terminal and open ahead of scheduled flights. The operator asks passengers to check in at least 60 minutes before departure, and recommends arriving at least 60 minutes before departure for domestic flights.

The operator's FAQ says most airlines offer online and app check-in, with airline counters at the airport for dropping off checked bags. Listen for boarding calls in the terminal and have your boarding pass ready.

Food, toilets and other facilities

The operator says there are no shops, cafes or restaurants at Longreach Airport. Vending machines in the Arrivals and Departures areas offer drinks, with light snacks in the Departures Lounge.

The toilets in both the departures and arrivals lounges each include an accessible bathroom with a baby change table. There is a water fountain in the Arrivals area, and power points for charging in both Arrivals and Departures. Smoking is not permitted inside the terminal, and designated smoking areas are outside.

Assistance and accessibility

If you need help, tell your airline when you book or at check-in; the operator says airline staff assist with boarding and disembarking. Accredited assistance animals are welcome in the terminal and on board, and the airline should be told beforehand. Accessible parking spaces are closer to the terminal entrance.

Lost property

Items lost on board go to the airline. For items lost in the terminal, use the Lost Property form on the operator's website or contact the airport.

General security screening rules

The Commonwealth's Cyber and Infrastructure Security Centre sets general conditions for air services, not a ruling on Longreach. It lists these as separate conditions for an open charter or regular public transport air service to be aviation security screened:

  • uses aircraft with a seating capacity of 40 or more persons
  • operates from an Australian designated, tier 1 or tier 2 security controlled airport
  • uses any aircraft departing from the same apron as a screened air service operating at a designated airport

Home Affairs liquids, aerosols and gels restrictions

The Department of Home Affairs page on what you can and cannot bring says each container must be 100 mL, 100 g or less, and all containers must fit in one transparent, re-sealable plastic bag. It says the restrictions apply in these situations:

  • when departing Australia
  • when transiting through Australia from one country to another
  • when travelling on the domestic leg of a flight departing from an Australian international terminal
  • before boarding an inbound flight at its last point of departure before it reaches Australia

Parking, drop-off and pick-up at Longreach Airport

The terminal car park takes both short-term and overnight parking, with spaces close to the terminal, and the operator says no booking is needed. For parking enquiries, contact the airport.

The passenger drop-off zone is near the Departures entry. The pick-up area is just past the taxi zone outside Arrivals.

Getting to and from Longreach Airport

Taxi and bus

Longreach Taxis runs to and from the airport, from a taxi zone outside the terminal near the pick-up area, on (07) 4658 0900. The operator also points passengers to a local bus from a nearby stop.

Car hire at Longreach Airport

Car hire companies have service desks and pick-up and drop-off areas at the terminal. The operator's parking and transport page lists them with their contact details.

The train to Brisbane

The Spirit of the Outback train is a way to reach Longreach, not the airport. Queensland Rail Travel runs it between Longreach and Brisbane, so ask Queensland Rail Travel where it stops in Longreach.
