Mount Isa Airport (ISA) is about 8 kilometres from the Mount Isa city centre along the Barkly Highway, in North West Queensland. Queensland Airports Limited has owned and operated it since 2005; the Federal Government privatised the airport in February 2005. It serves the mining industry, and the airport says the majority of its passengers travel for business or fly-in fly-out work, with visiting friends and relatives and leisure travel also playing a part.

The terminal opens in line with flight schedules; access may be restricted outside those times. Check-in counters are inside the terminal, followed by security screening and the departure lounge, where the café is and Gates 2 and 3 are. Gate 1 is used for arrivals.

Ground transport includes a taxi rank, coach and shuttle operators and car hire in Arrivals, and the short-term and long-term car parks are paid by card.

Check-in at Mount Isa Airport

The airport advises passengers to arrive at least 60 minutes before departure for domestic flights. The airport says its check-in counters open ahead of all scheduled flights. Most airlines offer online and app check-in, and the airline counters at the airport take bags if you are checking in luggage.

Rex sets its own closing time: Rex's check-in page says check-in closes 30 minutes before scheduled departure at regional airports in Queensland, apart from one where it closes earlier, and that web check-in opens 48 hours and closes 60 minutes before scheduled departure. Passengers with special requirements must check in at the airport, and Rex says a passenger who misses check-in may not be permitted to board.

The airport's 60 minutes is advice on when to arrive, and Rex's 30 minutes is when its check-in closes. Confirm the current closing time with Rex before you fly.

Security screening at Mount Isa Airport

Everyone entering the departure lounge goes through security screening, including friends and family. The screening includes body scanners, X-ray machines for personal items and carry-on bags, and random explosive trace detection checks.

The body scanners use non-ionising millimetre wave technology, like a mobile phone, and are not like an X-ray. The airport says they pose no known health risks and no known safety concerns for people with active implantable medical devices such as pacemakers or continuous glucose monitoring devices. Tell the screening officer beforehand if you need assistance or have a prosthetic, medical device or medical equipment.

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal, along with luggage trolleys and men's and ladies' toilets that are all wheelchair accessible. The airport says there are no cash machines inside the terminal and no locker facilities at the airport, so arrive with any cash you need. Smoking is not permitted inside the terminal; the designated smoking areas are outside.

Accessibility at Mount Isa Airport

The airport describes the terminal as wheelchair accessible, with accessible toilets and accessible parking near the terminal. Accessible bays are in both car parks and in the pick-up and drop-off zone.

A terminal map and a sensory map can be downloaded from the airport's website. The terminal map shows check-in, gates, food and drink, baggage claim and facilities, and the sensory map marks low, medium and high sensory zones.

The airport says accredited assistance animals are welcome in the terminal and onboard. If you need help boarding or disembarking, it advises telling your airline when booking or at check-in, and says airline staff will help.

Flying to Doomadgee: alcohol restrictions

Doomadgee's shire council puts the community about 630 kilometres by road from Mount Isa, and Doomadgee is an alcohol-restricted area. The Queensland Government's Doomadgee alcohol restrictions page, last updated on 1 July 2026, says the restricted area is the Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire, including all public and private places, plus both banks and the bed of the Nicholson River next to the community, excluding Old Doomadgee.

The page sets the limit at 22.5 litres of light or mid-strength beer (under 4% alcohol), and allows no wine, no spirits and no homebrew or homebrew equipment. It says the allowance applies per person on foot, or per vehicle, boat or aircraft regardless of the number of people in it, and that the penalties apply to all people living in, travelling through, visiting or working in the restricted area. Check the page before you pack alcohol for a flight to Doomadgee.

The 2022 screening area upgrade and the airport's history

The airport announced on 5 October 2022 that its upgraded security screening area was complete. The area was expanded, giving more space in the departures area and improved passenger flow into a larger departure lounge, and the screening point was reconfigured for enhanced security requirements. The work was funded with an Australian Government Regional Airports Screening Infrastructure grant and delivered by Woolam Constructions.

The airport's release called it the most significant project at the airport since the solar car park was delivered in 2017. The airport's own history says a new terminal was built in 1969, expanded in the 1980s and extensively refurbished in 2000, and that the runway was overlaid and the terminal improved in 2010.

Mount Isa and North West Queensland

Mount Isa City Council describes the city as the administrative, commercial and industrial centre for Queensland's North West, in the Carpentaria Mineral Province. The council lists the Mount Isa Rodeo, the Lake Moondarra Barramundi Fishing Classic and the Isa Street Festival among its major events, and the airport's website says the rodeo is held each August.

Outback at Isa, at 19 Marian Street, is the official Mount Isa Visitor Information Centre. It runs the Hard Times Mine Underground Tour, the Riversleigh Fossil Discovery Centre and the Bush Tucker Experience, among other programs.

The airport's own visitor page suggests Lake Moondarra, about 20 minutes from town, and the John Campbell Miles Memorial Lookout (City Lookout). For day trips it names Mary Kathleen, 55 kilometres east, Duchess, 99 kilometres south, Camooweal, 191 kilometres west, and Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park.
