Newman Airport (ZNE) is owned and operated by the Shire of East Pilbara, and sits south of the town of Newman in the Pilbara region of Western Australia (WA). The Shire describes it as the only inland public airport within the Pilbara, and as a link between Newman, the surrounding communities and Perth.

In the Shire's words, regional airports like this one enable fly-in fly-out workforces to reach remote worksites, support emergency and medical services, and connect residents, businesses and visitors. This site's schedule records show direct domestic flights from Newman Airport to Perth, with Qantas and Virgin Australia.

The terminal at Newman Airport

Newman Airport has one main terminal, and all regular passenger transport services operate from it. General aviation and rotary-wing operators have their own passenger buildings, so if you are flying with one of those, contact that company for where to go.

The terminal is open only during active flight times, and when the flight schedule shows no arrival or departure, it may be inaccessible to passengers and visitors. The wider airport precinct is open 24 hours a day for tenants and their guests, and the car parks operate around the clock.

The current passenger terminal was commissioned in February 2009, with screening for passengers and for checked and carry-on baggage, and a dedicated screened apron. The terminal it replaced, built in 1988, now holds the Airport Management Offices and a Royal Flying Doctor Service patient transfer station.

Facilities at Newman Airport

Free Wi-Fi covers the terminal and some surrounding areas, and terms may apply. The licensed area is Bar 68, in the departures lounge, and alcohol is only permitted when bought there.

Virgin Australia's Newman airport guide lists toilets, an accessible toilet and baby change facilities, cash machines in the terminal, and baggage carousels in the arrivals hall, with monitors showing the carousel number. The guide also places Virgin Australia's Baggage Services at its check-in counters, and says passengers who need help can ask a Virgin Australia team member for an escort to and from the gate.

The Shire's airport page says there are no lockers, because for security reasons the airport cannot be responsible for passenger belongings. It also asks travellers not to leave car keys with airport staff or in their vehicles.

Accessibility and lost property at Newman Airport

The Shire's disability access statement says it intends to meet every traveller's needs, and asks passengers with specific needs to contact their airline, the relevant tenant or the airport. Property lost on the airport premises is handled by the ground handler, North West Aviation, or by the Airport Management Office, which the Shire's page gives as open Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4.30pm. For anything left on board an aircraft, contact the airline.

Check-in and security at Newman Airport

Check-in times vary by airline, so confirm them with your airline, and baggage allowances also come from the airline. Virgin Australia's Newman guide gives its check-in counter staffing as 90 minutes before flights; confirm the time with Virgin Australia before you travel.

Newman Airport is a security-controlled airport with passenger and baggage screening, and the Shire has been its Screening Authority since May 2014. Bags left unattended in public areas are treated as suspicious, and threats about weapons or explosives are taken seriously, even as a joke.

The Shire lists items that are most frequently surrendered at security screening points. They include:

  • bladed implements such as knives, letter openers, sharp scissors and tools
  • box cutters, razor blades and screwdrivers
  • aerosols, cable ties, and kitchen or cooking equipment
  • imitation firearms and toys, fireworks and sparklers

Taxis, car hire and the Shire bus service

The taxi companies the Shire names are Newman Whaleback Taxi Service and Newman Maxi Taxi, and Virgin Australia's guide says taxis are outside the terminal. The car hire brands on the Shire's list include Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Thrifty, as well as a business listed as Rent a Car.

The Shire's Regular Passenger Transport bus runs Monday to Friday and is booked through the Shire office. Its listed pick-up points are Boulevarde Shopping Centre in Newman, Nullagine, Marble Bar, Port Hedland and South Hedland, and the airport is not one of them.

Parking at Newman Airport

The Shire's airport page describes a short-term car park about 20 metres from the terminal, for light vehicles and sedans without trailers. The long-term car park, about 100 metres from the terminal, takes all vehicles, and buses, trucks, minibuses, minivans, coasters, boats, caravans, motorhomes and anything towing a trailer must use it. Shuttle buses use the marked bays D1 and D13 in the long-term car park.

Paid parking has applied in all the car parks since early 2013, and the first hour is free in the short-term car park. There is no booking: you take a ticket at the entry. Pay stations in the arrivals area and at the long-term car park entrance take cash, Visa and Mastercard, a Visa or Mastercard can also be used at the exit gate, and each pay station and exit gate has 24-hour assistance.

Permanent residents of the Shire of East Pilbara can get a proximity card from the Shire for free long-term parking on a limited number of days each year.

Dropping off and picking up at Newman Airport

There is no stopping along the kerb in front of the terminal. Drivers dropping off use the marked area further along, where the limit is 2 minutes and the vehicle must be attended at all times.

Vehicles picking up passengers may not enter the drop-off area and should use the short-term car park instead. Only authorised vehicles can reach the freight shed, apart from light vehicles dropping off or collecting pets.

Some airlines use more than one terminal at Perth Airport, so confirm the terminal for your flight with your airline or Perth Airport before you travel.

Newman and Perth are both in Western Australia, which does not observe daylight saving. Queensland and the Northern Territory do not either; New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory do.

The Newman Airport redevelopment

The Shire's Newman Airport Integrated Redevelopment covers a terminal building upgrade, and additional taxiways and aprons with upgrades to existing infrastructure. The Shire says the airport is operating close to its practical capacity, and that the terminal and airside facilities were not designed for current passenger volumes, aircraft types or modern aviation standards.

In its March 2026 project update, the Shire said the taxiway and apron detailed design was complete, the terminal building design was progressing, and it was preparing to start the tender process. It said construction was expected to start in mid-2026 and would be delivered in stages to help minimise disruption to airport operations. The latest on the project is on the Shire's redevelopment page.

History of Newman Airport

The Shire's history of the airport says it was built by BHP Billiton as a dedicated mine site airstrip in 1968. The Shire of East Pilbara took over its ownership and management in April 1996, through an agreement with BHP Billiton.

Virgin Australia introduced the Embraer E190 to Newman in 2009, and the first Boeing 737 service between Perth and Newman flew on 14 May 2011. Newman Airport was named Small Regional Airport of the Year at the Australian Airports Association's national awards, announced on 21 November 2024.

Newman and the East Pilbara

Newman is the largest town in the East Pilbara, built in the 1960s by the Mount Newman Mining Company after iron deposits were found on nearby Mount Whaleback. The Shire describes Mount Whaleback as now the world's largest open-cut iron ore mine. It also writes that Newman is Nyiyaparli Country, and that Nyiyaparli and Martu people live in Newman together.

The Shire's list of things to see includes the Newman Visitor Centre, where the Mount Whaleback mine tour begins, and the walking trail to Radio Hill Lookout behind the Visitor Centre. As of September 2026, the Shire's page gives the Visitor Centre's hours as Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 9am to 1pm.

The Shire's list also names Kalgan Pool, Ophthalmia Dam, Gingianna Pool, which it says is accessible to both two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles, and Hickman Crater, which it describes as a four-wheel-drive journey. Martumili Artists at the East Pilbara Arts Centre and the East Pilbara Art Trail are on the list too.

Karijini National Park

Tourism WA, the state tourism body, suggests Newman as a base for exploring the Pilbara, including Karijini National Park. It says upgraded sealed roads in 2025 made the park's key visitor areas accessible to two-wheel-drive vehicles.

The Western Australian Government's page on the Karijini National Park management plan places the park in the Hamersley Range in the Pilbara, valued by the Panjima, Yinhawangka and Kurrama Aboriginal people.
