Port Hedland International Airport (PHE) is on the Great Northern Highway in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, about 7 minutes' drive from Port Hedland and South Hedland. PHIA Group of Companies (PHIA Group) bought the operating lease in March 2016 to run the airport for 50 years.
The operator describes the airport as the only international airport in the Pilbara region, supporting fly-in fly-out (FIFO) workforces, with links to the world's largest iron ore export port and major oil and gas fields. This site's schedule records show direct domestic flights from Port Hedland International Airport to Perth, with Qantas and Virgin Australia.
The terminal opens 90 minutes before the first scheduled flight of the day. The operator says its passenger terminal transformation is complete, along with upgrades to the airside pavements and lighting.
Airline check-in desks are directly inside the terminal entrance, and Qantas has Next-Gen check-in kiosks in the terminal. Check-in opening times vary, so confirm them with your airline before you arrive. Baggage allowances also vary by airline, so contact yours directly: Qantas is on 13 13 13 and Virgin Australia on 13 67 89.
Passengers are screened to federal government standards with x-ray machines, walk-through metal detectors and hand-held metal detectors, and passengers and baggage are also subject to random explosive trace detection checks. Checked bags are screened as well. Dangerous goods are prohibited, so check your airline's list of prohibited and allowed items.
The operator says baggage must not be left unattended anywhere in the airport precinct, and unattended bags are treated as suspicious. Comments about weapons or explosives are taken seriously and can lead to prosecution or refusal of carriage by the airline.
The terminal has male and female toilets, a shower, accessible toilets and a parents room. Filtered water is next to the Qantas check-in counters, and baggage trolleys are free in the terminal and at the trolley ramp beside the parking payment machine in the short-term car park.
The Airport Bar & Cafe is in the Departures Lounge after security, with indoor and outdoor seating, coffee, cold and alcoholic drinks, hot food, sandwiches, cakes and snacks. It opens at specific times around scheduled flights: for 60 minutes before each flight arrival and for 30 minutes after each flight departure. Red Vend vending machines in the terminal sell chilled non-alcoholic drinks and snacks, and they take card payments only.
Smoking is permitted only in the designated area in the airport forecourt. Mobility parking bays are in the short-term car park at the terminal, and your mobility permit needs to be clearly displayed.
For luggage lost or damaged on a flight, contact your airline or Northwest Aviation Services, the airline's contracted ground handling service. The lost baggage numbers are 08 9160 0528 for Qantas and 08 9160 0523 for Virgin Australia. For items lost or found in the terminal, call the airport on 08 9160 0500.
There is no public transport to the airport, according to the operator. Instead, the operator lists chartered coaches, taxis, rideshare and car hire, and there are car parks for your own car.
| Option | Details |
|---|---|
| Chartered coach | Arranged through your accommodation; coaches and shuttles have their own drop-off and pick-up staging zone |
| Taxi | OzTaxis, Hedland Taxis and South Hedland Taxis, booked by phone |
| Rideshare | Pick-up from the rideshare zone in the bus, taxi and rideshare car park, off the terminal forecourt |
| Car hire | Cars can be rented at the airport |
| Your own car | Short-term and long-term car parks, with touchless payment by licence plate recognition |
| Pick-up and drop-off | A free zone next to the terminal with a 2-minute limit; the driver stays with the vehicle |
The operator says most airport users arrive by coach, and chartered buses can be arranged through your accommodation. Buses and shuttles have a dedicated drop-off and pick-up staging zone.
Taxis can be booked directly with OzTaxis on 08 9140 1313, Hedland Taxis on 08 9173 1010 or South Hedland Taxis on 08 9172 1010. The rideshare operators the airport lists include H-Ride, which takes bookings through its app or on 08 9172 3333.
Taxi and rideshare pick-ups are from the designated zones in the bus, taxi and rideshare car park, off the terminal forecourt. Drop-offs by taxi or rideshare use the 2-minute drop-off and pick-up zone next to the terminal.
The operator says you can rent a car from the airport. Hertz's own website lists a location it calls Port Hedland Airport; confirm where it is and its opening hours with Hertz when you book.
The short-term car park is close to the terminal and is free for up to 30 minutes. The long-term car park is further away, a 3 to 5 minute walk along the central pedestrian footpath, and is free for the first 60 minutes before charges apply.
You do not need to book: park, then pay on exit by credit card or at the pay machine beside the short-term car park. Payment is touchless, using licence plate recognition, and you can pay by cash, credit card or payWave. Regular users can open a contract parking account with the operator.
The car parks have 24-hour CCTV and periodic daytime attendant patrols, according to the operator's parking and transport page. Parking anywhere else at the airport is prohibited without authorisation, and vehicles may be towed.
The free drop-off and pick-up zone is next to the terminal, and stops there are strictly limited to 2 minutes. The operator says that, because of aviation security requirements, vehicles must not be left unattended in the zone at any time. Vehicles left unattended receive an immediate fine and could be towed.
Direct domestic flights recorded from Port Hedland International Airport go to the destination below, with the airlines recorded on the route. Those airlines are Qantas and Virgin Australia.
| Destination | Airport | Airlines recorded |

| Perth | Perth Airport (PER) | Qantas, Virgin Australia |
Port Hedland and Perth are both in Western Australia, which does not observe daylight saving. Queensland and the Northern Territory do not either; New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory do.
The airport gained international status in 1986. Home Affairs lists the liquids, aerosols and gels restrictions as applying when departing Australia, when transiting through Australia from one country to another, and when travelling on the domestic leg of a flight departing from an Australian international terminal. Each container must be 100 mL or less, and all containers must fit in one transparent, re-sealable plastic bag.
The Town of Port Hedland describes the area as one of Australia's most cyclone-prone regions, with the cyclone season typically running from November to April each year. For the latest warnings and emergency information, the Town's advice is to follow the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) and emergency services.
The Town's cyclones page explains the Australian Warning System levels: Advice, Watch and Act, and Emergency Warning.
The operator describes Port Hedland as the second largest town in the Pilbara, made up of two main residential centres, Port Hedland and South Hedland. The Kariyarra people, the area's original inhabitants, call it Marapikurrinya, which the operator gives as meaning "place of good water".
Western Australia's state tourism site describes the town as the world's largest bulk export port, where visitors can watch enormous ships and long ore trains at work. It says the Staircase to the Moon occurs between March and October, when the full moon rises over exposed tidal flats. Its list of things to see includes Spinifex Hill Studios, the Courthouse Gallery, Spoilbank Marina and Cemetery Beach, where turtles nest in season.
The airport is also home to the region's Royal Flying Doctor Service and Port Hedland School of the Air. The operator suggests Karijini National Park and 80 Mile Beach as trips further afield.
PHIA Group runs the airport under an operating lease it bought in March 2016, to operate the airport for 50 years. The group is managed by Dexus and Foresight Group. The airport's phone number is 08 9160 0500.
