Port Macquarie Airport (PQQ) is at 99 Boundary Street, about 5 kilometres west of the centre of Port Macquarie on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales (NSW). Port Macquarie-Hastings Council owns and operates it as a commercial business unit, and the airport says it serves Greater Port Macquarie and the wider Mid North Coast region.
This site's schedule records show direct flights with Qantas to Brisbane and Sydney, and with Rex to Sydney. The airfield is also used for pilot training, aircraft maintenance, freight and charter flights, emergency aero medical flights, search and rescue, and bushfire fighting.
The passenger terminal was upgraded in a project completed in December 2019 that doubled the size of the previous building, with larger check-in, departures, arrivals, security screening and baggage claim areas. The departures and arrivals areas are air-conditioned, and free Wi-Fi runs through the council's network.
The terminal opens at least one hour before the first flight of the day and closes 30 minutes after the last flight, so its hours follow the flight schedule.
Airline check-in desks are in the Departures area at the western end of the terminal. The airport recommends checking in early, preferably 60 minutes before the scheduled departure time, and asks passengers to check their airline's own check-in opening and closing times. Baggage allowances vary between airlines, so check your ticket information before you pack.
The departure lounge opens at least 80 minutes before each scheduled departure and stays open 30 minutes after each departing flight. It has the Biggles Flight Lounge cafe and bar, and the airport says the departure lounge is open to the general public but may be subject to security screening.
Screening at Port Macquarie Airport can depend on the aircraft. The airport's frequently asked questions (FAQ) page says flights such as the Rex Saab 340 operating at Port Macquarie may not require mandatory security screening of passengers.
Where screening applies, the Department of Home Affairs says officers may use a body scanner or a walk-through metal detector, and a passenger selected for the body scanner cannot opt out. You may be asked to take out liquids, aerosols, laptops and tablets, and the requirements differ between airports depending on the equipment used.
An item surrendered at the screening point is not returned, though the airport says an item that meets checked-baggage safety rules can sometimes be moved to your checked bag instead. Photographs of check-in counters, check-in staff, security procedures, equipment and security staff are not permitted.
The arrivals area has the car rental desks, a car parking payment machine, an automated teller machine (ATM) and baggage claim, including oversize baggage. Toilets are beside the arrivals area and in the departure lounge, including disabled and ambulant toilets, and the departure lounge has a parents room with a baby change station.
The airport's FAQ lists luggage storage, showers and baggage trolleys as not available at the airport, so expect to carry your own bags between the kerb or car park and the terminal. Smoking is not permitted inside the terminal or within 10 metres of it.
For lost property, contact the airline about anything left on an aircraft or in checked baggage, and the council about items lost in the terminal.
The airport asks passengers who need assistance to contact their airline in advance. The drop-off and pick-up zones have wheelchair access points, accessible parking for mobility permit holders is in the airport car park, and there is a hearing loop inside the terminal.
The airport is reached by road via Hastings River Drive and Boundary Street, which the council describes as the main road access to the airport. Taxis and shuttle buses pick up in zones in front of the baggage claim area, and public buses use a stop next to the rental car park.
| Option | Details from the airport and the bus operator |
|---|---|
| Bus | Busways route 341 runs between Port Central and Port Macquarie Airport; fares are paid on board |
| Taxi | Port Macquarie Taxi Cabs, from the taxi zone in front of baggage claim |
| Shuttles and minibuses | The airport lists Cruise in Style Limousines, Frankie's Travel, Hastings Shuttle Service, Macleay Shuttle Services, Pacific Transfers and Port Mini Bus Rentals |
| Car hire | Several car rental companies have desks in the terminal, including Budget, Hertz, Redspot, Sixt and Thrifty; cars are collected and returned at a rental car park to the north of the terminal |
| Your own car | Carpark 1 in front of the terminal and Carpark 2 off Tuffins Lane, both paid |
Busways route 341, "Port Central to Port Macquarie Airport", runs on weekdays, on Saturdays, and on Sundays and public holidays. Its stops include Port Central (Clarence Street and Hay Street), Settlement City Shopping Centre, Clifton Drive and Regatta Crescent, and Kemp Street and Mumford Street, though some trips do not call at every stop. Check the Busways Port Macquarie Region timetable for times, and pay the fare on board.
Carpark 1 is directly in front of the terminal and suits short stays. Carpark 2, off Tuffins Lane about 150 metres from the terminal, is the one the airport suggests for parking of a week or more.
Pre-paid parking is not available at either car park: take a ticket or scan a credit card on entry, then pay by cash or card at the pay station near baggage claim, or present the same card at the exit for ticketless parking. Both car parks are free for a short period at the start of a stay and charged by time after that, and the airport's parking page lists the current charges. The pay stations and boom gates have help buttons.
The airport's FAQ says that at this stage there are no public undercover car parking facilities at the airport.
The kerbside drop-off zone in front of the terminal allows a maximum of two minutes while you unload passengers and bags, and you must not leave the vehicle unattended. Parking in the drop-off zone is not permitted at any time, and private vehicles may not use the taxi and shuttle bus zones in front of baggage claim.
You may also pick up passengers at the terminal drop-off zone if they are all waiting kerbside and are ready to leave with their luggage, and standing there is permitted for two minutes. To walk someone into the terminal, use the car park and its free period at the start of a stay.
Direct domestic flights recorded from Port Macquarie Airport go to the places below, with the airlines recorded on each route.

| Brisbane | Brisbane Airport (BNE) | Qantas |
| Sydney | Sydney Airport (SYD) | Qantas, Rex |
The airport lists the Qantas flights under QantasLink, which it says has operated at Port Macquarie Airport since 1989. It gives QantasLink's aircraft as the Q400, the Q300 and the Dash 8 200 series, and Rex's as the Saab 340.
Brisbane is in Queensland, which does not observe daylight saving. Port Macquarie and Sydney are in New South Wales, which does.
The council has completed an airside upgrade that strengthened runway 03/21, extended it 110 metres to the south and widened it, leaving it 1800 metres long and 45 metres wide. The airport says the upgraded runway can take Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 aircraft for the first time in its history, and the apron for regular public transport flights was expanded with extra parking positions for larger aircraft. A parallel taxiway, 877 metres long, is complete and in use.
The council has published the Port Macquarie Airport Master Plan 2045, which it describes as a 20-year vision for the airport. Boundary Street, the main road to the airport, is the subject of a separate council upgrade project, which the council describes as in a review phase.
Visit NSW describes Port Macquarie as sitting at the mouth of the Hastings River, four hours' drive north of Sydney and six hours' south of Brisbane. Its list of things to do includes the Koala Hospital, Billabong Zoo, the Port Macquarie Coastal Walk into Sea Acres National Park with its 1.3 kilometre rainforest boardwalk, and beaches such as Town Beach, Flynns Beach and Lighthouse Beach.
Visit NSW gives May to November as the best time for whale watching, and dolphin watch cruises also run.
