Wagga Wagga Airport (WGA) is on Don Kendell Drive in Forest Hill, New South Wales (NSW), and serves Wagga Wagga, which the operator calls the hub of the Riverina. Wagga Wagga City Council manages the civil airport. The Department of Defence describes it as a shared civilian and military facility on Defence-owned land, alongside RAAF Base Wagga, the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) base.

The operator's About page says the airport is also home to the heavy maintenance facility of Rex, the Australian Airline Pilot Academy and other aviation businesses.

The terminal at Wagga Wagga Airport

The operator places an automatic teller machine (ATM), the car park's pay station and the car hire counters inside the terminal.

Check-in at Wagga Wagga Airport

The operator recommends arriving at least 60 minutes before your flight's departure time. Its passenger page says the airport has no self check-in kiosks and no automatic bag drop, and that online check-in may be available through your airline. Check your airline's own check-in and baggage rules before you fly.

Security screening at Wagga Wagga Airport

The operator's security page says all departing passengers are screened, with 1 July 2012 given as the effective date. Screening uses x-ray machines, walk-through and hand-held metal detectors, and explosive trace detection for random checks. Prohibited items are surrendered and are not returned, and the operator says storage facilities are not available and it is not permitted to hold items such as car keys, surrendered items or baggage.

Passengers in a wheelchair receive a pat-down from an officer of the same sex, and passengers with a medical implant or prosthesis may ask for separate screening. Closed-circuit television (CCTV) runs 24 hours a day. For dangerous goods, the operator points passengers to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) "Can I pack that?" app.

The operator's FAQ page says medicines, baby products and prescription items may go through screening, and opened food and drink must be sealed. Alcohol in unopened retail packaging is permitted in carry-on or checked baggage, up to a net total of 5 litres per person and no stronger than 70% alcohol by volume. Drinking it on board is not permitted.

The cafe and other facilities

Bidgee Brew is the airport's cafe. Its hours are below, and all operating hours can fluctuate depending on flight schedules.

Saturday5.30 am to 1.00 pm

The operator also lists amenities and a parents room, free WiFi, and snack and drink vending machines.

The operator's FAQ page says smoking is allowed only in designated areas, and not in the terminal, at the front of the building or on the aprons. It sets aside the grassed area to the left of the terminal for smokers.

The operator says the freight lodgement and animal drop-off and collection area is to the left of the terminal's main entry doors, and that transfers must be booked in advance.

Arriving at Wagga Wagga Airport

Follow the signs to the baggage collection area. If you need a wheelchair or other help on arrival, the operator says to contact your airline before the flight.

A single car park serves both short and long stays, with no separate short-stay or long-stay area. It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and monitored by CCTV. The first 60 minutes after entry are free, and charges apply after that.

The operator says to pay at the Automated Pay Station in the terminal, by cash or card, and that you then have 20 minutes to leave. It also says the exit gate readers accept credit card only. The car park has two entry points next to the terminal and two exits on the western side, leading to Don Kendell Drive.

The operator says caravans, vehicles towing trailers, and vehicles longer than 4.9 metres, wider than 2 metres or higher than 2.9 metres must not enter through the ticketing area, and that their drivers need to ring it to arrange parking. If you have a problem at a gate, the intercom has a HELP button.

Drop-off and pick-up at Wagga Wagga Airport

The operator does not permit drop-off or pick-up in front of the terminal. It describes that stretch as a NO STOPPING zone used only by buses, delivery vehicles and taxis, and says drivers must park in the car park, where the first 60 minutes are free.

Car hire at Wagga Wagga Airport

The car hire counters are in the terminal next to the Arrival Gate, and the companies the operator lists include Budget, Hertz and Sixt. To return a hire car, take a ticket at the car park entry and park at the rear of the car park.

The airfield shared with RAAF Base Wagga

The Department of Defence describes Wagga Wagga Airport as a shared civilian and military facility on Defence-owned land alongside RAAF Base Wagga. The Air Force says the base has been part of the Wagga Wagga community since 1940. It delivers initial military training through No 1 Recruit Training Unit, technical training through the RAAF School of Technical Training, and logistics and personnel training through the RAAF School of Administration and Logistics Training.

The new lease

The operator's About page says the airport is Commonwealth (RAAF) owned, and that Wagga Wagga City Council leased the civil side in 1992 for 30 years. On 17 September 2026, a Defence ministerial release announced agreement on a new 50-year lease between the council and the Department of Defence. Under the agreement, the council will continue to manage the airport and Defence keeps access to support operations at RAAF Base Wagga.

A week earlier, on 10 September 2026, the council said it was entering the final stages of negotiating the lease. It also said it would develop a new Airport Masterplan once the new lease is signed.

Planned works at Wagga Wagga Airport

On 10 September 2026, the council announced that it would progress two Australian Government funding agreements for the airport. The funding was first offered in 2020 and did not progress because of uncertainty over the lease. The council's announcement says the works will move forward when the lease is formally signed.

The terminal and screening upgrade

The council says the terminal work, funded through the Regional Airports Screening Infrastructure Program, is to meet Department of Home Affairs requirements for screening space. The council plans to expand and refurbish the terminal, fit new passenger and carry-on baggage screening equipment, and improve the screened departure area and passenger amenities. It says the terminal will keep operating during construction, with a little disruption.

The runway and taxiway lighting upgrade

The aerodrome lighting upgrade, funded through Round 2 of the Regional Airports Program, covers ageing runway and taxiway lighting, wind indicators and Precision Approach Path Indicator lighting. It also adds lighting to aircraft movement areas that the council says cannot currently be used at night or in low-visibility conditions.

Wagga Wagga and the Riverina

The operator describes Wagga Wagga as the hub of the Riverina, on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, and as the largest regional city in NSW. Visit NSW calls it the largest inland city in NSW.

Charles Sturt University puts Wagga Wagga two and a half hours from Canberra by car.

The operator's region page says the Visitor Information Centre is temporarily at the Museum of the Riverina, on the Historic Council Chambers site.
