Aurukun Airport (AUU) is the airstrip for Aurukun, a remote Aboriginal community on the north-west coast of Cape York Peninsula in Queensland. The council gives the distance from Aurukun to Cairns by road as 811 kilometres, or 11 hours.
Skytrans is the airline the site's schedule data records at Aurukun. Skytrans closes check-in 45 minutes before the scheduled departure time at Aurukun, Lockhart River and some other Cape York airports, and 30 minutes before at all other airports. Aurukun Shire Council opened a new terminal building on 19 October 2021.

At Cairns, Skytrans's conditions say its flights depart from and arrive at the domestic terminal.
Aurukun Shire Council opened a new terminal on 19 October 2021. At the opening, the mayor said that until then people waiting for flights faced the prospect of standing in the rain or the heat, with very little undercover space and just a couple of bench seats. In 2021 the council described the airport as one-third larger than its predecessor, with an enclosed, air-conditioned building that has seating, office space, a security inspection space, internal bathrooms, a waiting room for aircraft staff and formal car parking areas.
At the opening, the council said the entrance design was inspired by the water lilies in Aurukun's wetlands, and that dots along a pathway through the airport represent Aurukun's rivers, which also feature in the council logo. It also described a timber water lily sculpture suspended from the ceiling of the passenger waiting lounge.
Airservices Australia's aerodrome entry for Aurukun, in its issue of 3 September 2026, lists a passenger lounge and toilets. It lists wifi and 4G mobile reception as available at all hours.

The council places the supermarket near the Council Chambers at 506 Kang Kang Road, with the Kang Kang Cafe and Bakery and a gift shop opposite the Chambers, and a retail fuel outlet on Kang Kang Road. It warns that if you arrive in the community late in the afternoon, you might not be able to buy food before the supermarket closes, and says it is worthwhile to consider bringing some food with you.
The council also lists a post office, a library and internet facilities, a health clinic, a Uniting Church and a boat ramp for recreational fishing among the community's services. It says the supermarket, the cafe and the post office each have a cash machine, and lists Telstra 4G among the mobile networks.
Aurukun Shire Council says most residents are Traditional Owners of the shire and surrounding lands, and names the spiritual clan groups as Apalech, Winchanam, Wanam, Chara and Puutch. According to the council, Wik Mungkan was the Australian Indigenous language most reported at home in Aurukun in the 2011 Census.
The council says Aurukun was originally known as Archer River Mission Settlement, established in 1904 for the Presbyterian Church, and that the name Aurukun is said to have a local meaning associated with a large lagoon on the Watson River, to the south. On 22 May 1978 the Local Government (Aboriginal Lands) Act came into force, constituting the Aurukun Shire Council.
The council says the Wik and Kugu Arts Centre is known for the wooden sculptures produced in its men's workshop, which represent an extension of traditional cultural practices related to animal totems. For information or sales, the council gives the centre's contacts as (07) 4060 6843 and [email protected].
Skytrans describes Aurukun as offering vast wetlands and fishing spots along the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Skytrans's Terms and Conditions close check-in 45 minutes before the scheduled departure time at Aurukun. They say passengers who do not check in before closure will not be able to travel and their fare is not refundable, and that passengers who have checked in online must present bags to the check-in counter before closure.
Skytrans says you will be required to provide identification at check-in, and asks you to contact it before departure with any questions about acceptable identification.
Under the "All Other Flights" heading of its Terms and Conditions (effective 24 July 2026), Skytrans currently allows two carry-on items up to 7 kg total combined weight, within 48 x 34 x 23 cm, and two checked items up to 20 kg total combined weight. Checked baggage must not exceed 140 cm in total dimensions, and items over 32 kg or 140 cm must be booked as freight. Wheelchairs, other mobility aids and strollers do not count towards the allowance.
Skytrans says excess baggage may not be carried on the booked flight, even if prepaid, and that where carrying baggage on the passenger's own flight is impractical, it may travel on the next available flight. Claims for damaged or lost baggage must be reported to Skytrans within 24 hours, and if no staff are present, photographic evidence taken at the airport must be submitted to Skytrans.
Skytrans's Terms and Conditions say alcohol management programmes are in place in many of the communities in Cape York, and that Skytrans will not carry passengers with alcohol on flights into these communities. Its Travel Information page says the carriage of alcohol is not permitted on Skytrans Australia flights operating into or via dry communities, whether in checked baggage, carry-on baggage or on your person.
Skytrans classes infants as under 2 years and children as 2 to 11 years. Skytrans says an infant must travel with a parent or a passenger 15 years of age or over who is an immediate family member or authorised guardian, and that a child must be accompanied in the same way unless accepted for carriage as an unaccompanied minor. For an unaccompanied minor, Skytrans says the parent or guardian completes its form, the person escorting the child at departure stays at the airport until the flight has departed, and the person collecting the child on arrival must produce identification.
Skytrans says it may be able to provide limited assistance at some ports for special requirements such as wheelchairs and service dogs, and asks you to contact it before booking to confirm availability. It says it does not provide therapeutic oxygen for passenger use, and that a passenger who needs it must provide their own medical oxygen equipment or portable oxygen concentrator and obtain medical clearance before travel.
Skytrans's Terms and Conditions say schedule times may change for a variety of reasons without notice, and that after a cancellation or delay it may move passengers to alternative flights. Passengers who choose not to accept the change may receive a refund, a credit of their fare or another available flight, and Skytrans recommends travel insurance.
Skytrans's Disrupt Policy lists weather affecting operational conditions among the delays outside its control, and says passengers are notified by text message and email using the booking's contact details. For a flight cancelled on the day for reasons within its control, where the next available flight is the following day or later, Skytrans says it will offer accommodation where available to passengers away from their home port.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) describes the monsoon as part of northern Australia's wet season from November to April, and gives the official tropical cyclone season in the Australian region as 1 November to 30 April. Aurukun Shire Council says Aurukun has an annual wet season, with most of the rain falling between December and March, and that wet season storms may cause local flooding at any time.
The council's visitor information page says that in the wet season load limits or road closures do not occur on the 70 km sealed section of the Aurukun Access Road between Aurukun town and the shire boundary, and that restrictions there will only be introduced if it is severely damaged by a natural event such as a cyclone or widespread flooding. It advises road users to check with Cook Shire Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

It says it is also an offence to attempt to bring alcohol into the restricted area, and that the penalties apply to all people living in, travelling through, visiting or working in the restricted area. Vehicles found carrying alcohol in the restricted area may be confiscated.
The Queensland Government says two far northern biosecurity zones have been established in the northern half of Cape York Peninsula, to control the movement of risk items that may carry pests and diseases south. Moving plants, plant pests, soils and related equipment out of these zones requires a biosecurity instrument permit. The Government also asks travellers to follow the quarantine restrictions that apply to fruit, soil or plants when moving between biosecurity zones in Cape York and the Torres Strait.
