The terminal at Thangool Aerodrome

What the council lists at the aerodrome

Banana Shire Council's aerodromes page lists a passenger terminal, a freight processing area, a fuel facility for Avgas and Jet A-1, and a light aircraft tie-down area at Thangool. Link Airways' check-in list calls the terminal at Biloela (Thangool) the Main Terminal.

The council says Thangool is certified with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). Besides Link Airways, it lists freight services, aircraft charter, general aviation, and medical flights by the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the Aerial Ambulance among the aerodrome's uses.

The council's 2019 terminal conditions

Banana Shire Council's Conditions of Use for its aerodromes, effective 1 July 2019, refer to a check-in counter in the terminal at Thangool. The same document, effective 1 July 2019, set out conditions of entry for the council's aerodrome terminal buildings, among them no smoking, no weapons, no bikes or similar riding vehicles, no helmets, and no animals except assistance guide dogs and those used for law enforcement.

Getting between Thangool Aerodrome and Biloela

Link Airways places the airport 11 km south of the Biloela town centre, a 15 minute drive.

Hertz lists a pick-up location it calls Biloela Thangool Airport on its Biloela car hire page. The council's Conditions of Use, effective 1 July 2019, refer to the aerodrome car park and set aside reserve car parking for commercial hire companies, which the council says is to keep parking bays available for the general public.

Biloela: visitor centres, the art gallery and Callide Dam

Banana Shire Council lists visitor information centres in Biloela at 10A Callide Street and at the Rural Hinterland centre, 11 Exhibition Avenue. It points visitors to the tourism website Sandstone Wonders.

Sandstone Wonders lists the Banana Shire Regional Art Gallery in Biloela as open to the public on weekdays and selected weekends. The gallery hosts the Brigalow Arts Festival each October, which Sandstone Wonders describes as the Banana Shire's largest display of visual arts in an open exhibition, with a professionally judged suite of art awards.

Sandstone Wonders places Callide Dam 12 km from Biloela by sealed road, and lists fishing for golden perch (yellow belly), saratoga, barramundi, eel-tailed catfish, sleepy cod and silver perch, with redclaw abundant. The same listing places the Callide Mine Lookout 18 km from Biloela, reached by following Biloela Callide Road past the power stations, with views of the Callide Power Stations, Lake Callide and the Callide Valley.

Mount Scoria Conservation Park

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service places Mount Scoria Conservation Park 17 km south-east of Biloela, and lists toilets, picnic tables (some sheltered) and walking, with no camping. It describes Mount Scoria as rising 150 m above the cultivated plains. It is the remains of a volcanic plug formed by volcanic activity 20 to 26 million years ago, with mostly hexagonal basalt columns that the service says are best viewed from the walking track.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service says Mount Scoria Conservation Park is part of the Gangulu Nation People's traditional country, and that the Gangulu Nation People call the mountain Dangama Mungar (Talking Mountain). They consider it culturally significant, along with a number of other mountains in the area and Lake Victoria north-west of Biloela. Signs along the short walking trail tell cultural stories of the Gangulu Nation People.

The service asks visitors to stay on the walking track, not to climb the mountain, and not to strike the basalt columns, as this can cause significant damage. Open fires are not permitted, and collecting firewood from the park is illegal.

Link Airways check-in, baggage and travel rules

Check-in and identification

Link's Conditions of Carriage say that, as a general rule, check-in closes 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time, that different airports may have different check-in deadlines, and that the deadline for your flights is given in your itinerary. Online check-in opens 24 hours before the scheduled departure time. Unaccompanied minors, passengers travelling with an infant and passengers with special need requirements must check in at the airport in person.

The Conditions of Carriage ask you to bring valid photographic personal identification, such as a passport or driver's licence, and to be at the boarding gate no later than the time given to you at check-in. Link's online check-in page and its frequently asked questions say children under 18 travelling with a parent or guardian do not need identification as long as the parent or guardian has one.

Baggage

Link currently allows an adult or child one cabin bag of up to 7 kg, within 48 x 34 x 23 cm, and says crew may direct that a cabin bag be stowed in the hold even when it complies, with the bag made available on arrival. Its Conditions of Carriage set the checked allowance at 23 kg or 15 kg depending on the fare, within 140 cm in total linear dimensions, and do not accept any single item over 32 kg. Check the allowance on your booking with Link before you fly.

Link says additional or overweight baggage may not be carried on the same service as you, and that it will try to place it on the next available flight without guaranteeing this. Under its Conditions of Carriage, adults accompanying an infant who is not occupying a seat may check in one stroller, bassinet or car seat, up to 23 kg per infant, in addition to their allowance, and Link asks to be told before booking. Passengers with reduced mobility may check in a fully collapsible self-propelled wheelchair or one of the listed hand-propelled mobility aids, up to a maximum of 32 kg per passenger, and Link asks to be told before booking.

Only service animals can be carried in the cabin, and other domestic animals are not accepted in the cabin or the hold.

Children and unaccompanied minors

Link sets these age bands for children:

  • infants under 2 years old and children 2 to 4 years old cannot travel alone, and must be accompanied by another person 15 years of age or older, or by their parent or legal guardian aged 13 years or above
  • children 5 to 11 years old must be booked as an unaccompanied minor to travel alone, or be accompanied in the same way
  • children 12 to 15 years old can travel alone or can be booked as an unaccompanied minor
  • young people 16 to 17 years old can travel alone

Link asks for notice of an unaccompanied minor, on its Unaccompanied Minor Form, before the booking can be confirmed, and says it does not carry unaccompanied minors who have connecting flights with any other airline. The adult seeing the child off must stay at the gate until 10 minutes after the flight has taken off, and the person collecting the child must show valid photographic identification.

Special assistance and the Disabled Passenger Lift

Link asks for advance notice of the type of specific assistance you need before your booking is confirmed. Its Disabled Passenger Lift is for passengers who are unable to safely walk up and down the aircraft stairs, and Link says that, regardless of the aircraft type, Biloela is one of the outports that cannot cater for passengers who require one.

Link says it does not provide assistance from the kerb to the check-in counter, or from the baggage collection area to the kerb, and that not all mobility devices can be accommodated in the cabin of its aircraft due to space restrictions. Passengers bringing their own breathing equipment or a portable oxygen concentrator from Link's list email Link a doctor-completed Medical Information Form at least 72 hours before travel, and guide, hearing and mobility assistance animals are permitted with evidence sent at booking.

Delays and cancellations

Link's Conditions of Carriage name weather events among the events beyond its control, and say flights may be delayed or cancelled, or diverted to airports other than those scheduled. For a delay or cancellation caused by such an event, Link says it will use reasonable endeavours to rebook you on the next available flight on its services, or alternatively give a flight credit valid for 12 months after the ticket was issued, and that it will not be responsible for paying any other costs or expenses you incur, except as otherwise provided in the Conditions of Carriage or as required by applicable laws. Link does not guarantee flight times, and says you should check before your flight.

Commonwealth aviation security rules

Commonwealth screening rule for air services

The Cyber and Infrastructure Security Centre (CISC) says an air service that operates open charter or a regular public transport operation must be aviation security screened if it:

  • uses aircraft with a seating capacity of 40 or more persons
  • operates from an Australian designated, tier 1 or tier 2 security controlled airport
  • uses any aircraft departing from the same apron as a screened air service operating at a designated airport

Home Affairs liquids, aerosols and gels restrictions

The Department of Home Affairs applies its liquids, aerosols and gels restrictions in these situations:

  • when departing Australia
  • when transiting through Australia from one country to another
  • when travelling on the domestic leg of a flight departing from an Australian international terminal
  • prior to boarding an inbound flight at its last point of departure before it reaches Australia

Where they apply, each container must be 100 mL or 100 g or less, and all containers must fit in one transparent, re-sealable plastic bag.
