Narrabri Airport (NAA) is owned and operated by Narrabri Shire Council, and sits on Airport Road (Shire Road 8), on the left-hand side of Kaputar Road as you travel from Narrabri towards Mount Kaputar National Park. The council's airport page puts it approximately 8 km by road east of the Narrabri town centre.

Link Airways is recorded flying to Brisbane and FlyPelican to Sydney, and each airline sets its own check-in, baggage and assistance rules. Link says it cannot cater at Narrabri for passengers who need its Disabled Passenger Lift, and FlyPelican says all passengers must be able to climb the six steps into its aircraft. The council's 2025 Master Plan also describes the terminal's facilities as limited.

FlyPelican says that from 8 April 2025 its flights leaving Sydney go from Terminal 3 (T3), with check-in in T3, and that its flights arrive at Terminal 2 (T2), with baggage collection at T2. Link Airways' check-in list gives its Brisbane location as the Domestic Terminal, Ground Floor.

At Narrabri Airport

Who runs the airport

Narrabri Shire Council says the airport is owned and operated by the council, and Airservices Australia's aerodrome entry, in its issue of 3 September 2026, names Narrabri Shire Council as the aerodrome operator. The council's Narrabri Airport Master Plan 2025 lists the airport's uses as scheduled services, unscheduled charter services in support of mining operations, Royal Flying Doctor Service medical transport, seasonal aerial firefighting and general aviation. The council calls the airport "the economic lifeline for the resource industry and the broader regional community".

In a release of 29 October 2024, the council said it received a contribution under the Australian Government's Regional Airports Program towards upgrading the apron lighting, and was awarded funding under the program to resurface the runway.

The terminal building

The 2025 Master Plan describes a terminal building first constructed in 1962 and refurbished in 1998, with a passenger check-in area, a small departures and arrivals lounge with seating and amenities, baggage claim, and an external grassed area with a path leading to the departures and arrivals gate. Link Airways' check-in list gives its Narrabri location as the Main Terminal.

The plan says the passenger terminal facilities are limited, and that stakeholders identified constraints during peak periods for charter aircraft, along with a need for improved check-in, amenities and hire car facilities. Airservices Australia's aerodrome entry lists a taxi, a passenger lounge, toilets, hire car and refreshment under passenger facilities. Airservices' key to the codes says that where refreshments are indicated there is usually some limitation on the hours, and availability may vary from full meal service to a drink vending machine.

Parking and set-down

The 2025 Master Plan describes a car park for up to 50 vehicles, with a passenger drop-off and pick-up zone in front of the terminal building.

The council's proposed new terminal

The Master Plan's short-term strategy proposes a new passenger terminal building, a new car park beside it, and changes to the internal roads to give drop-off and pick-up, taxi and public transport zones. The plan says delivery of any individual component depends on the availability of funding, market demand and a full detailed design process, and that the timing may be delayed or accelerated.

Link Airways and FlyPelican rules for flights from Narrabri

Checking in with Link Airways

Link Airways' Conditions of Carriage say that, as a general rule, check-in closes 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time, that different airports may have different deadlines, and that your Check-In Deadline is given in your itinerary. Online check-in opens 24 hours before the scheduled departure, though the Conditions add that some routes are excluded from online check-in for operational reasons, and Link says unaccompanied minors, passengers travelling with an infant and passengers with special needs must check in in person at the airport. Passengers with checked bags must still take them to the check-in counter at least 30 minutes before departure.

Link's Conditions of Carriage ask you to bring valid photographic personal identification, such as a passport or driver's licence. Link's online check-in page and FAQ say children under 18 travelling with a parent or guardian do not need identification as long as the parent or guardian has it.

Checking in with FlyPelican

FlyPelican says its airport check-in opens 1 hour before departure and closes strictly 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time, and it recommends being checked in at least 45 minutes before. Its Conditions of Carriage say photo identification and a copy of your itinerary are required at check-in.

FlyPelican launched online check-in on 25 August 2026, and its Conditions of Carriage say online check-in opens 48 hours and closes 60 minutes before the scheduled departure. Unaccompanied minors, passengers travelling with infants and passengers with special needs must check in in person at the airport, and online check-in passengers must show valid photographic ID at the check-in counter or the boarding gate.

Link Airways baggage

Link's cabin allowance is one piece for an adult or child, up to 7 kg and 48 x 34 x 23 cm. Link says its crew may direct that a cabin bag be stowed in the hold even when it complies, and that it will be returned to you on arrival.

Link's Conditions of Carriage give a checked allowance of 23 kg or 15 kg, depending on the fare, and Link's baggage page says each piece must not exceed 140 cm in total (length, width and height added together). Link says no single item over 32 kg is accepted, and that additional or overweight baggage may not travel on the same service as you; it will try to place it on the next available flight but makes no guarantee.

The Conditions also allow an adult travelling with an infant to check in one stroller, bassinet or car seat, up to 23 kg in total per infant (subject to operational limits), and a passenger with reduced mobility to check in a fully collapsible self-propelled wheelchair or a hand-propelled mobility aid, such as crutches or a walking stick, up to 32 kg per passenger, each in addition to the allowance, with notice given before booking. Link says only service animals can be carried in the cabin, and that other domestic animals cannot currently be accepted on its aircraft.

FlyPelican baggage

FlyPelican's Conditions of Carriage give a single allowance of 20 kg or 23 kg, depending on the fare, that is all-inclusive of both checked-in baggage and carry-on baggage. Carry-on baggage "needs to be able to be placed under the seats", within 32 cm long, 20 cm high and 18 cm wide and a maximum of 4 kg. A larger bag "may be hand carried to the aircraft" up to 7 kg for one piece or 10 kg for two, and is stowed in the hold and returned to you at the destination.

FlyPelican says no one item may exceed 32 kg, and that golf clubs, surfboards, snowboards, skis and musical instruments can be carried as part of your allowance; FlyPelican should be told when oversized baggage is expected, and it reserves the right to refuse these items at the time of the flight.

Infant and child car seats and personal mobility devices are carried in addition to the allowance where the passenger depends on them, and an infant has its own 7 kg allowance for accessories such as a pram and portable cot. When operational requirements dictate, FlyPelican says it may restrict baggage to the allowance included in your fare and will try to place excess baggage on the next available flight.

Boarding and special assistance

Link Airways says its Disabled Passenger Lift is for passengers who are unable to safely walk up and down the aircraft stairs, and that, regardless of the aircraft type, it cannot cater at Narrabri for passengers who require the lift. Link asks for advance notice of the type of assistance needed before your booking is confirmed. It also says it does not provide assistance from the kerb to the check-in counter, or from the baggage collection area to the kerb.

FlyPelican says it operates a fleet of Jetstream 32 aircraft, and that all passengers must be able to climb the six steps into the aircraft to travel, and that an access ramp or passenger lift cannot be used with the aircraft design. It says wheelchair assistance is available between the terminal and the aircraft on request. Where a situation needs pre-approval from its Operations Team, FlyPelican says uplift on your flight is not guaranteed unless the approval number is obtained at least 2 working days before travel.

Children travelling alone

Link Airways says infants under 2 and children aged 2 to 4 cannot travel alone, and that a child aged 5 to 11 must be booked as an unaccompanied minor to travel alone or be accompanied by someone aged 15 or older, or by a parent or legal guardian aged 13 or above. Children aged 12 to 15 can travel alone or be booked as unaccompanied minors, and those aged 16 and 17 can travel alone. Link says that if you do not tell it at booking that your child is travelling as an unaccompanied minor, the child may not be accepted for travel alone and may be denied travel at the airport, and that it does not carry unaccompanied minors with connecting flights on any other airline.

FlyPelican says it accepts unaccompanied minors aged 9 to 11, under the supervision of the operating crew. The parent or guardian phones FlyPelican's bookings team to request the service and book the flights, completes its Unaccompanied Minor Form, and brings the original form to check-in with valid ID showing the child's date of birth. FlyPelican's Conditions of Carriage say each infant aged 0 to 24 months must travel on the lap of an adult, with one adult per infant, and that children aged 2 to 4 must travel with a supervising adult.

Delays, cancellations and weather

Link Airways' Conditions of Carriage name weather events among the events beyond its control, and say flights may be delayed, cancelled or diverted to airports other than those scheduled. For a disruption beyond its control, Link says it will try to rebook you on its next available flight or offer a flight credit valid for 12 months from the ticket's issue, and that it will not pay any other costs you incur, except as otherwise provided in the Conditions of Carriage or as required by applicable laws.

FlyPelican's Conditions of Carriage say it may cancel, delay or reschedule flights because of unsuitable weather conditions, and that, to the extent the law allows, it is not liable for losses from a cancellation or delay. FlyPelican also says it may substitute other means of transport without notice.

Getting to and from Narrabri Airport

By road

The council's airport page puts the airport approximately 8 km by road east of the Narrabri town centre, reached from town by Old Gunnedah Road, Kaputar Road and Airport Road. Details of the airfield and the council's contacts are on the council's Narrabri Airport page.

Car hire

Sixt says its Narrabri Airport desk is at the Hire Car Pick-up Zone adjacent to the terminal, with cars parked outside the branch in designated bays. Its page lists the branch's business hours as Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm.

Airservices Australia's aerodrome entry lists the codes TX and HC (taxi, hire car) in its passenger-facilities field, and its key to the codes warns that a taxi or hire car may need a phone call after arrival.

NSW TrainLink to Narrabri town

Transport for NSW's NSW TrainLink timetable for the North Western Region includes Narrabri, and says all seats on NSW TrainLink Regional train and coach services must be booked in advance.

Narrabri and what is nearby

The town and shire

The council's 2025 Master Plan places Narrabri Shire in the Namoi River Valley, approximately six hours' drive north-west of Sydney and approximately 2.5 hours south of the Queensland border. It describes the township of Narrabri as the Shire's major services and administration hub, and names mining, agriculture, construction, and rental, hiring and real estate as the top industries by output in 2022. The plan describes a temperate climate with a mean maximum temperature of 26.9 degrees Celsius and 129 days a year above 30 degrees.

Mount Kaputar National Park

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) says two volcanoes pushed Mount Kaputar high above the plains, and that the park is the traditional Country of the Gamilaroi Aboriginal people. It says there are Aboriginal rock carvings, campsites, marks on trees and axe grinding grooves throughout the park.

NPWS describes Sawn Rocks as one of Australia's best examples of organ-piping, and says the park is home to a bright pink slug, more than 185 bird species and the critically endangered Kaputar rock skink, found only in the high rocky peaks. Cabins and camping are available in the park.

From Narrabri, NPWS directions take Old Gunnedah Road and then Kaputar Road for around 27 km to the park entrance; the airport is reached from town along the same Kaputar Road. From the entrance the road to the summit is steep and winding, with unsealed sections, and caravans and large motorhomes are not permitted beyond that point. NPWS says the park is always open but may close at times because of poor weather or fire danger, and that mobile phone reception in the park is limited.

NPWS says the mountains can be up to 10 degrees cooler than the surrounding towns in summer, and that winter brings mist around the high plateau and occasional snow. Check the NPWS local alerts for Mount Kaputar for changed road conditions and closures before you drive up.

Paul Wild Observatory

CSIRO says its Paul Wild Observatory, about 25 km from Narrabri, has been part of radio astronomy research since the 1960s, and since 1988 has been the site of the Australia Telescope Compact Array, a set of 22-metre dish antennas. Five of the six dishes sit on a three kilometre stretch of railway track in front of the visitors centre, which is self-guided and open from 8.00am to 5.00pm daily, including public holidays. CSIRO asks visitors to put phones and other Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices in flight mode, and says causeways and floodways can become quite deep during and after rain.

CSIRO describes the observatory as located on Gomeroi Country.

The Pilliga

NPWS describes the Pilliga Forest, between Coonabarabran and Narrabri, as the largest native forest west of the Great Dividing Range, covering about 5,000 square kilometres of public bushland, and as the traditional Country of the Gamilaroi People. It says the best way to enter is via the town of Baradine, where the Pilliga Forest Discovery Centre is, and recommends calling in there first.

NPWS advises a four-wheel drive or a two-wheel drive with some ground clearance, and says flooding can leave roads and creek crossings uncrossable. NPWS says to check the park alerts before you head off.

The Sculptures in the Scrub, at Dandry Gorge in Timmallallie National Park, were made by five artists who worked with Aboriginal elders and young people of the region, according to NPWS.

Crossing between New South Wales and Queensland

Biosecurity on the Brisbane route

The Brisbane flight crosses from New South Wales into Queensland. The NSW Department of Primary Industries says that when travelling across state or quarantine borders you should check what you are carrying and whether any restrictions apply, follow the rules for moving items like produce and animals, and clean shoes and gear to avoid spreading pests. Business Queensland says biosecurity laws restrict the movement of certain plant material, soil and related equipment into Queensland, and that generally, moving these items into the state needs a biosecurity certificate issued by an interstate authority.

Daylight saving

The NSW Government says New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory observe daylight saving, and that Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not.

Commonwealth aviation security rules

Commonwealth screening rule for air services

The Cyber and Infrastructure Security Centre (CISC) says an air service that operates open charter or a regular public transport operation must be aviation security screened if it:

  • uses aircraft with a seating capacity of 40 or more persons
  • operates from an Australian designated, tier 1 or tier 2 security controlled airport
  • uses any aircraft departing from the same apron as a screened air service operating at a designated airport

Home Affairs liquids, aerosols and gels restrictions

The Department of Home Affairs applies its liquids, aerosols and gels restrictions in these situations:

  • when departing Australia
  • when transiting through Australia from one country to another
  • when travelling on the domestic leg of a flight departing from an Australian international terminal
  • prior to boarding an inbound flight at its last point of departure before it reaches Australia

Where they apply, each container must be 100 mL or 100 g or less, and all containers must fit in one transparent, re-sealable plastic bag.
