Booking a seat between Adelaide and Olympic Dam

Alliance's frequently asked questions page says tickets on its regular public transport services with a flight number beginning QQ, Alliance's airline code, are sold through Book A Flight on its own website, and its home page lists Adelaide to Olympic Dam. A BHP communication published on Roxby Council's site on 7 July 2026 says publicly available seats on Alliance flights can be booked via the Alliance website.

Facilities and works at Olympic Dam Airport

Airservices Australia's entry for Olympic Dam lists a public telephone, taxi, hire car and toilets among the passenger facilities. Airservices Australia's note on these codes says a taxi or hire car may need a phone call after arrival.

The entry places the mine and plant areas north of the aerodrome, and tells pilots to avoid overflying them because of obstacles and blasting. In a communication published on Roxby Council's site on 7 July 2026, BHP said upgrades to Olympic Dam Airport were under way.

Getting to Roxby Downs

Roxby Council's traveller information page puts Olympic Dam Airport 10 km out of Roxby Downs. The council's Welcome to Roxby brochure, reviewed in February 2026, says vehicles are available from hire operators located at the Olympic Dam airport.

The council's road directions are to turn off the Stuart Highway at Pimba, bypass Woomera and follow Olympic Dam Road. From the Oodnadatta Track, the route is the unsealed Borefield Road and then Olympic Way.

For outback road conditions, the council points drivers to an outback roads page and a recorded report on 1300 361 033. The Visitor Information Centre in Roxby Downs also gives an outback road condition report.

Roxby Downs and the Olympic Dam mine

The town and the mine

Roxby Council describes Roxby Downs as a town purpose built to support the Olympic Dam mine site, which is owned by BHP and produces copper, uranium, gold and silver. Roxby Downs was originally a cattle station and takes its name from the pastoral station, while the mine is named after a stock-watering dam on that lease, built during the Melbourne Olympic Games in 1956. The deposit was confirmed in 1975, and the town and the mine were officially opened on 5 November 1988.

The council's brochure puts the mine 16 kilometres north of the town. The council says the Kokatha are the traditional owners of the land where BHP's Olympic Dam exploration lease is located.

The council describes average annual rainfall in Roxby Downs as minimal, at 148 mm.

Visitor Information Centre and Roxby Link

Roxby Council's Visitor Information Centre is at 1-15 Richardson Place, in the Roxby Link building alongside the Roxby Community Library. The centre offers brochures and maps, souvenirs, community information, an outback road condition report, the Olympic Dam video presentation and WiFi, and its phone number is (08) 8671 5941. Roxby Link also holds the Dunes Cafe, an art gallery, a cinema and pools.

Accommodation in Roxby Downs

The council names Discovery Parks Roxby Downs, at 94 Burgoyne Street, and Nightcap Roxby Downs, at 1 Richardson Place, as the main accommodation options in town.

Andamooka, Woomera and the Oodnadatta Track

The council names Andamooka, Woomera and Pimba as the closest neighbours of Roxby Downs. It describes Andamooka, roughly 30 km from Roxby Downs, as an opal mining town with historical cottages, a historic mining machinery display, an underground opal and mineral museum and a public noodling area. It lists the Woomera Heritage Centre (Rocket Range Museum), Missile Park and Breen Park at Woomera, roughly 80 km from Roxby Downs, and Spuds Roadhouse at Pimba, at the Stuart Highway turn-off.

Further out, the council lists William Creek, Marree and Oodnadatta, each reached on unsealed roads, and Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park, with the Borefield Road leading to the Oodnadatta Track.

Alliance Airlines check-in, baggage and travel rules

Check-in and identification

Alliance says check-in for all its flights closes strictly 30 minutes before the flight departure time, and that website and mobile check-in open 24 hours before departure. Alliance says seat selection is only available at check-in, and Alliance's fare conditions list no changes or bookings at the airport.

Alliance asks passengers to produce photo identification at check-in, such as a driver's licence, an employee identification card or a valid passport. Under clause 16.2 of its Conditions of Carriage, infants aged 0 to 2 do not need photo identification, and children 3 years and older must produce identification such as a birth certificate, passport, student identification or Medicare card. Alliance says passengers who cannot provide sufficient identification may be denied boarding.

Baggage

Alliance says a passenger in a paid seat is entitled to one piece of cabin baggage and, unless otherwise stated, 20 kg of checked baggage in economy. Any item must not exceed 158 cm in total linear dimensions (width plus height plus length), and Alliance says some ports impose reduced weight limits based on local policies, with any item over the size or weight limit not accepted at check-in. Its Conditions of Carriage say an item over 32 kg will not be accepted as checked baggage and must be processed as cargo.

Alliance says each aircraft is different and is restricted to carry certain weights on some routes, and that its staff may direct a cabin bag to be stowed in the hold. Excess baggage is carried subject to space and may not travel on the same service as the passenger. Alliance says it will not be liable for loss of, damage to or delay of fragile or perishable items, money, jewellery, electrical equipment or other valuables in checked baggage.

Children travelling alone

Alliance defines an unaccompanied minor as a child aged 5 to 11 inclusive travelling without the supervision of a person 15 years of age or over, and says young adults aged 12 to 14 inclusive may travel with unaccompanied minor status if their parent or guardian requests it. Alliance says children under 5 can only travel with an adult aged 15 or older.

Alliance says bookings for unaccompanied minors are made through its Reservations Team, with a separate Unaccompanied Minor Form for each child. It says the person seeing the child off stays with them at check-in and at the airport until the aircraft has departed, and the person collecting the child at the destination airport presents photo identification.

Special assistance and medical travel

Alliance's Conditions of Carriage say a passenger who needs special assistance, for example because of limited mobility, must notify Alliance before buying the ticket to discuss the arrangements. Battery-powered mobility aids and medical oxygen need Alliance's Operator Approval, with an Operator Approval Form emailed before the day of travel, and the application form for an assistance dog is due at least 14 days before travel.

Alliance requires a medical clearance for a passenger of unstable health, or with a recent or current injury, illness or infectious disease. It requires a medical certificate dated no more than 10 days before travel for a single pregnancy beyond the 36th week, a multiple pregnancy beyond the 28th week, and a complicated or high-risk pregnancy at any stage.

Delays and cancellations

Alliance's Conditions of Carriage say times shown in timetables are not guaranteed, and name bad weather, air traffic control delays, technical disruptions and late inbound aircraft among the reasons schedules change. Alliance says it does not guarantee it will be able to contact you, so before the day of your flight you should check that the flight times have not changed.

If Alliance cancels or delays a flight because of circumstances beyond its control, its conditions say it will carry you on another of its scheduled services with space available, if you still wish to travel, or refund the sector fare. Alliance says it will not pay any other costs the delay or cancellation causes unless its Conditions of Carriage, a Convention or applicable law provide for them.

Fruit fly restrictions in South Australia

The Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) says there are restrictions on moving fruit and vegetables within declared fruit fly outbreak areas in South Australia. If you live in or are travelling through a declared outbreak area, PIRSA says the restrictions apply to certain fruits and vegetables regardless of their source, in both red outbreak areas and yellow suspension areas.

PIRSA's outbreak restrictions page sets out the restrictions, and its fruit fly site carries an outbreak map. Its fruit fly hotline, open 24 hours, is 1300 666 010.

Commonwealth aviation security rules

Commonwealth screening rule for air services

The Cyber and Infrastructure Security Centre (CISC) says an air service that operates open charter or a regular public transport operation must be aviation security screened if it:

  • uses aircraft with a seating capacity of 40 or more persons
  • operates from an Australian designated, tier 1 or tier 2 security controlled airport
  • uses any aircraft departing from the same apron as a screened air service operating at a designated airport

Home Affairs liquids, aerosols and gels restrictions

The Department of Home Affairs applies its liquids, aerosols and gels restrictions in these situations:

  • when departing Australia
  • when transiting through Australia from one country to another
  • when travelling on the domestic leg of a flight departing from an Australian international terminal
  • prior to boarding an inbound flight at its last point of departure before it reaches Australia

Where they apply, each container must be 100 mL or 100 g or less, and all containers must fit in one transparent, re-sealable plastic bag.
