St George Aerodrome (SGO) is the airport for St George, the hub town of Balonne Shire in Queensland, and Balonne Shire Council runs it. The council's Aerodromes page describes a licensed strip with a 1500 m sealed and lit runway, and says passenger flight services are available to and from the town. St George sits on the Balonne River in farming country that produces cotton, sorghum and cattle, and the St George Region tourism site puts the region 5.5 hours west of Brisbane on the Adventure Way.
Balonne Shire Council runs aerodromes at St George, Dirranbandi, Bollon and Hebel, and its page says light aircraft charters, air ambulance and government aircraft, aerial spraying and general aviation services are also available from St George. The council calls the strip St George Aerodrome, and the St George Region visitor guide calls it St George Airport.
Airservices Australia's aerodrome entry (issue of 3 September 2026) is headed Saint George and names Balonne Shire Council as the aerodrome operator. Under passenger facilities, the entry lists toilets and a passenger lounge, and it lists no taxi, hire car or bus to town. Airservices' key to the codes in its aerodrome entries says that in many instances services such as taxi or hire car are not available at the aerodrome itself, but need to be contacted by telephone after arrival.
In 2019 the Queensland Government announced Building our Regions funding to upgrade airside services at the St George Industrial Estate, with new lots for hangar development, a new hardstand area, an all-weather taxiway link and secure airside access for new tenants. The statement said the project would help local agriculture operators export their products, and would help the community to be better supported during disaster response and recovery.
Direct domestic flights recorded from St George Aerodrome go to the places below, each flown by Rex. The council's Aerodromes page also names Rex for passenger flights, and points travellers to Rex's website or its phone line, 13 17 13.
| Destination | Airport | Airline recorded |
|---|---|---|
| Cunnamulla | Cunnamulla Airport (CMA) | Rex |
| Toowoomba | Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport (WTB) | Rex |
St George is on the Western 1 regulated air route of the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, and Rex operates it. The department says it regulates routes where demand is too low for them to be commercially viable for operators, and that after an extension the current contracts now expire on 31 December 2027.
Rex says its airport check-in desk closes 30 minutes before scheduled departure at regional Queensland airports other than Burketown, and it recommends presenting checked bags 60 minutes before. The boarding gate closes 15 minutes before departure at regional airports, and a passenger who is not ready at the gate by then is excluded from boarding and forfeits the fare. Web check-in opens 48 hours and closes 60 minutes before scheduled departure, but passengers with special requirements have to check in at the airport.
Rex's Travel Requirements page asks passengers aged 18 and over for an acceptable form of identification (ID), with the name matching the booking. A passenger without photographic ID can show two forms of non-photographic ID, and passengers aged 17 or under need no ID when they travel with, or are presented at check-in by, an identifiable guardian.
For regional services operated by the Saab 340 turboprop, Rex's baggage page allows 7 kg of carry-on baggage on all fares, and 15 kg or 23 kg of checked baggage, depending on the fare. Carry-on bags may be weighed and measured, and one over the limit at the gate is offloaded, sent on the next available flight as checked baggage, and left for you to collect from the airport. Rex says its cargo compartment "has only a very limited capacity", and it reserves the right to offload checked bags within the allowance when the aircraft is restricted in the baggage it can carry.
Rex's access plan has passengers boarding the Saab 340 by the aircraft stairs. Rex says some airports in Queensland cannot cater for passengers who need its Disabled Passenger Lifter, and asks anyone who cannot climb the aircraft stairs to call its Customer Contact Centre on 13 17 13 before booking. It asks for special requirements at least 48 hours before departure.
Rex's conditions of carriage name inclement weather among the events beyond its control, and say times of arrival and departure are not guaranteed. When Rex cancels, it may offer a seat on another flight that day or another day, other transport such as a bus, or a flight to the nearest alternative Rex port; if Rex changes or cancels the booked flight, the passenger may instead cancel the ticket for a full refund. Rex also warns that, because some regional airports have limited facilities, refreshments may not always be available during a delay.
The Cyber and Infrastructure Security Centre (CISC) says an air service that operates open charter or a regular public transport operation must be aviation security screened if it:
The Department of Home Affairs applies its liquids, aerosols and gels restrictions in these situations:
Where they apply, each container must be 100 mL or 100 g or less, and all containers must fit in one transparent, re-sealable plastic bag.
The St George Region tourism site places the shire west of the Great Dividing Range and east of the outback, and says St George straddles the meeting of the Moonie, Carnarvon, Castlereagh, Barwon and Balonne Highways. The shire is on the Adventure Way and Great Inland Way tourist routes, and the tourism site's visitor information page says Murrays Coaches services the region (13 22 51).
For road conditions, the same page points to the St George Region Explore Centre, the visitor information centre at 114 St Georges Terrace (07 4620 8877), and to the Queensland Government traffic line on 13 19 40. The visitor guide lists an electric vehicle charging station behind the St George Library.
The guide's Cotton Self-Drive Trail starts at the Explore Centre and passes the airport, where the turn into it is at Cliff Parsons Drive. The guide gives the option of parking at the turn into the airport there and walking across the road for a better look at the machinery used on the farms.
The tourism site describes St George as situated along the Balonne River and celebrated as the Inland Fishing Capital, and the visitor guide says the region goes into harvest mode in March and April each year, when the cotton is picked.
The Balonne Artesian Thermal Hot Springs (BATHS) are at the St George Aquatic Centre, which Balonne Shire Council's page says is independently operated by St George Aquatics, with summer and winter opening hours. The tourism site's listing describes a warm, mineral-rich artesian water bath at 34 to 38 degrees, a 50-metre lap pool, a children's splash park, change rooms and a canteen.
Riversands Vineyards is 3 km from St George, and the tourism site calls it "Queensland's most western winery", family-owned and operated. The site also lists a Cotton Farm and Vineyard Tour.
The St George Heritage Tour, as the tourism site lists it, is a 4-hour guided tour covering the history of St George, the Harmony Centre, the E.J. Beardmore Dam and the horticulture and grape-growing heritage at Riversands Vineyards.
The E.J. Beardmore Dam is 21 km north of St George on Thungaby Road, and its listing says it was built in 1972 as a water source for irrigation and urban needs along the Balonne River. The listing describes a recreation area where you might spot kangaroos, lists toilets among its accessible services, and places the dam where the Maranoa and Balonne Rivers meet, at the northern reach of the Murray-Darling Basin.
The Harmony Centre, at 74 St Georges Terrace, is listed as a place to celebrate the culture of the region's First Nations peoples: the Kamilaroi, Gamilaraay, Gunggari, Mandandanji, Kooma, Bigambul and Euahlayi. Its listing describes a small gallery of local artwork for sale and a recording studio dedicated to preserving cultural heritage, with opening hours Monday to Friday and a note to call ahead. The Queensland Government's statement on the centre's opening says the South West Indigenous Corporation will own and manage it.
The St George Pilots Memorial, on St Georges Terrace opposite the visitor information centre and overlooking the Balonne River, honours St George men who served as pilots in the Second World War. The tourism site and guide also list these places in and near town:
Balonne Shire Council, PO Box 201, St George, Queensland 4487, phone 07 4620 8888.
The Airservices aerodrome entry lists toilets and a passenger lounge. It lists no taxi, hire car or bus to town. Airservices' key to the codes in its aerodrome entries says that in many instances services such as taxi or hire car are not available at the aerodrome itself, but need to be contacted by telephone after arrival.
The site's schedule data records Rex, with direct flights to Cunnamulla and Toowoomba. The council's Aerodromes page also names Rex for passenger flights.
