Tamworth Regional Airport (TMW) is on Basil Brown Drive in Westdale, New South Wales (NSW), about 10 kilometres and around 10 minutes from the centre of Tamworth, according to the operator. Tamworth Regional Council owns and operates the airport, and some of the operator's pages shorten its name to Tamworth Airport.

This site's schedule records show direct flights with Qantas to Sydney and with Link Airways to Brisbane. The airfield is also home to flight-training and other aviation organisations, and each January the city holds the Tamworth Country Music Festival.

The terminal at Tamworth Regional Airport

The terminal has a Qantas Club lounge, the Airport Cafe and free wifi, with accessible parking and restrooms and assistance on request. It opens 90 minutes before the first flight and closes an hour after the last flight, so its opening hours follow the flight schedule; check with the airport before a very early or late flight.

Check-in at Tamworth Regional Airport

Check-in counters are at the front of the terminal. They generally open 1 to 1.5 hours before departure and close 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time. The airport recommends arriving at least one hour before your flight, and its FAQ suggests 60 to 90 minutes for domestic passengers.

Have photo identification and travel documents ready. Flights are booked through your airline or a travel agent, not through the airport, so check baggage and check-in rules with your airline before you fly.

Security screening at Tamworth Regional Airport

The operator describes the airport as a security-controlled aerodrome with screening for all public transport flights. The council's airport page lists walk-through and hand-held metal detectors, x-ray machines for carry-on and checked baggage, and explosive trace detection.

For liquids, the airport's FAQ page refers passengers to their airline and to the Australian Government's TravelSECURE page. That page says screening is compulsory for people and bags entering the secure area of an Australian airport, and that passengers cannot choose how they are screened.

The Qantas Club lounge

The Qantas Club lounge is past the security screening point, in the departure lounge. The airport says access is for Qantas Club members, eligible Frequent Flyers and passengers travelling in Business Class on Qantas flights. It lists seating, refreshments, reading material and charging stations.

The Airport Cafe and other facilities

The Airport Cafe is in the Arrivals section of the terminal and services all weekday flights; it is closed on Saturdays and Sundays. It generally opens about an hour before each flight, and its hours are approximate and subject to change with the flight schedule. The airport's FAQ on public holidays says the airport operates most days of the year, though some facilities, such as the cafe or rental car desks, may have reduced hours.

Smoking is not permitted inside the terminal or near its entry points, and there are designated smoking areas outside. Approved therapy and assistance dogs are permitted in the terminal, and a function room is available for hire.

The operator's FAQ says the airport has no valet service and no long or short-term storage service; parking is in the car parks described below. Lost property enquiries go through a form on the airport's website, and several motels and hotels are within a short drive of the airport.

Pay by card at the machines in the terminal or at the exit gates, but cash is accepted only at the terminal machines. Accessible parking is in the short-term car park.

The two-minute drop-off point at the front of the terminal is strictly for dropping off and unloading. Drivers of large vehicles or caravans should contact airport administration about parking.

Transport for NSW says the Armidale XPLORER runs daily between Sydney and Armidale and stops at Tamworth. The council says ShuttleLink runs to both the airport and the train station.

The council's airport page says QantasLink flies Dash 8 aircraft (the 200, 300 and Q400 models) between Tamworth and Sydney, and Link Airways flies Metro 23 and SAAB 340 aircraft between Tamworth and Brisbane.

The council's airport page describes a main runway 2200 metres long and 45 metres wide, with a grooved bitumen asphalt surface, full lighting and an instrument landing system (ILS). It also lists an air traffic control tower and a parallel all-weather sealed runway, 1100 metres by 18 metres, for aircraft up to 5700 kilograms.

The council's airport page names organisations at the airport including Sigma Aviation, Aviskills, Sydney Flight College, Airspeed Aviation, AirMed, New England Flight Training, Tamworth Aero Club, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) regional office and the International Flight Training Tamworth pilot training facilities.

International Flight Training Tamworth

The airport describes International Flight Training Tamworth (IFTT) as an aviation training facility offering pilot training programs for domestic and international students. The airport names Singapore Flying College and Sydney Flight College as the current tenants.

The council announced in October 2023 that Sydney Flight College would open an academy at the airport from July 2024, and the airport now lists the college as a tenant. In April 2026, the council welcomed Singapore Flying College to IFTT.

The IFTT upgrade

The council says it secured funding in late 2025 for staged upgrades at IFTT, covering air conditioning and lighting in the C and D accommodation blocks, roof repairs at the main hangar, a solar power system and repairs to the hail nets on the IFTT apron. It expects the work to be complete in 2028, and says the upgrade will increase pilot training capacity.

The Tamworth Country Music Festival

The festival is held in Tamworth each January, and its organisers describe it as a 10-day, non-gated event and the largest and longest country music festival in the southern hemisphere. The 2027 festival, the 55th, runs from 15 to 24 January 2027, and the council says the Golden Guitar Awards will be held on the final Saturday.

Transport for NSW says a bus shuttle runs to the major venues and accommodation during the festival. The festival's travel page lists flying, driving, train and coach options, and recommends the Hazards Near Me and Live Traffic apps.
