Weipa Airport (WEI) serves Weipa, a town on Albatross Bay on the western shores of Cape York Peninsula in Queensland. The Weipa Town Authority, the local governing body for the township, says the airport is about 15 minutes from the township. The Weipa Town Authority says the Weipa township does not have an Alcohol Management Plan, but that such plans exist throughout the Cape York communities and heavy fines may apply to breaches. The Queensland Government lists Napranum and Mapoon among the communities with alcohol restrictions. It says these restrictions ban or limit the amount and type of alcohol you can take into a community.
Napranum is a western Cape York community formerly known as Weipa South. The Queensland Government says the Napranum restricted area is the Napranum Aboriginal Shire, including all public and private places and all waterways where both banks are within the shire, and that "The possession of alcohol is prohibited in Napranum." It also says "The section of the Peninsula Development Road that passes through the shire is excluded from the restricted area", and that its penalties apply to all people living in, travelling through, visiting or working in the restricted area.
Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council says Napranum has a zero alcohol carriage limit, which means no alcohol, home brew or home brew equipment is allowed in Napranum.
Mapoon is a Cape York community north of Weipa, and the Queensland Government says its restricted area is the Mapoon Aboriginal Shire, including all public and private places and all beaches and foreshores above the low tide level. Its Mapoon page sets carriage limits by type of alcohol, which apply per person on foot, or per vehicle, boat or aircraft regardless of the number of people in it. It also says you can't drink alcohol in a public place within the restricted area.
Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council strongly recommends that anyone intending to camp at Cullen Point books online before driving into Mapoon, and says Mapoon does not have a 24-hour reception desk. It says camping and overnight stays are only allowed in approved locations, and that camping is not permitted on public land, parks and foreshores, whether in a tent, in a vehicle or on the ground. Penalties apply for illegal camping.
The Weipa Town Authority says Rio Tinto owns and operates the Weipa bauxite mine, and that much of the land around the township is leased to the company. The authority describes two seasons: the wet, from November to April, and the dry, from May to October.
The authority also says crocodiles live in the waterways in and around Weipa, and asks for sightings within the township to be reported.
RTA Weipa Pty Ltd is listed as the aerodrome operator in Airservices Australia's entry dated 3 September 2026.
