Ayers Rock Airport (AYQ) is on Coote Road at Yulara in the Northern Territory (NT), about 10 minutes' drive from Ayers Rock Resort. Parks Australia, the park authority for Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, calls it Ayers Rock/Connellan Airport. Airservices Australia's aerodrome entry names Voyages Tourism Australia Pty Ltd as the operator, and passenger information is on the operator's Ayers Rock Airport page.

The rock itself is registered in the NT Place Names Register as Uluru / Ayers Rock. Parks Australia gives the drive from Ayers Rock Resort as about 20 minutes to Uluru and 45 minutes to Kata Tjuta.

Direct domestic flights recorded from Ayers Rock Airport

DestinationArrival airportAirlines recorded

MelbourneMelbourne Airport (MEL)Jetstar, Virgin Australia
SydneySydney Airport (SYD)Jetstar, Qantas
BrisbaneBrisbane Airport (BNE)Virgin Australia

The operator sends passengers to their airline for bookings, check-in, baggage rules and flight schedules. For oversized luggage, passengers are also sent to the airline. Airservices Australia's aerodrome entry states that direct international flights to and from the aerodrome are not approved.

Daylight saving differs by state and territory: the NT does not observe it, and nor do Queensland and Western Australia, while New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory do.

Check-in and security screening at Ayers Rock Airport

The operator recommends arriving at Ayers Rock Airport 1.5 hours before your scheduled departure time, and says check-in normally takes about 30 minutes. Baggage of any size must not be left unattended at the airport.

Ayers Rock Airport is a security controlled airport, and a body scanner is in use at the screening point. At the screening point the operator says passengers must take off belts, watches and outer jackets and empty their pockets completely, tissues and coins included, and passengers with medical implants must tell the Aviation Protection Officers before going through the body scanner or the walk-through metal detector.

The Department of Home Affairs limits on powders, liquids, aerosols and gels apply when departing Australia, when transiting through Australia from one country to another, on the domestic leg of a flight departing from an Australian international terminal, and before boarding an inbound flight at its last point of departure before Australia. Under the limits, each container must be 100 mL or 100 g or less, all containers must fit in one transparent re-sealable plastic bag, and each passenger may bring one bag.

Terminal hours and facilities at Ayers Rock Airport

The operator gives the terminal hours as 7.45 am to 4.30 pm, and says closing times may vary depending on airline schedules. The terminal has complimentary Wi-Fi throughout, car hire kiosks, a cafe serving hot and cold drinks and snacks, a gift shop in the departure terminal, and toilets.

The operator says the bathrooms are wheelchair accessible and trolleys are in the arrivals hall. Parent facilities are in the disabled toilet in the arrivals hall and in the ambulant female toilet in the departure lounge. Wall-mounted power outlets are limited, and there is no luggage storage and there are no lockers at the airport.

No tour operators have desks or information at the airport, and visitors are pointed to the Tourist Information Centre in the Town Square at Yulara for tours. Property left in the terminal goes through Airport Administration (Operations) during office hours, and anything left on an aircraft through the airline.

Getting to and from Ayers Rock Airport

Ayers Rock Resort hotel guests on scheduled Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia flights have a complimentary coach, and car hire companies have desks at the airport. The operator says there are no taxis or ride-sharing services in Yulara, and Parks Australia says there are no taxis or other public transport.

Resort coach for Ayers Rock Resort hotel guests

Complimentary coach transfers are available for Ayers Rock Resort hotel guests arriving or departing on scheduled Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia flights, and bookings are not required. After collecting your luggage, follow the hotel transfer signs to the AAT Kings coach outside the terminal.

Return transfers to the airport leave about two hours before your flight, and resort reception has the exact times. Around Yulara, the resort is compact enough to walk around, and its free shuttle bus runs between the accommodation and the Town Square, according to Parks Australia.

Car hire

Car hire companies including Hertz and Thrifty have desks at Ayers Rock Airport, and rentals can be picked up and dropped off at the airport or the resort. Parks Australia says Yulara has only a limited number of rental cars, and strongly recommends booking a few weeks ahead.

Parks Australia says all roads in the park are sealed, so a normal two-wheel-drive car is fine for driving around it. The Yulara Shell service station has fuel, electric vehicle charging and a cash machine, and is open daily from 7.00 am to 8.00 pm.

Coaches and driving to Kings Canyon and Alice Springs

Coach transfers run between Ayers Rock Resort, Kings Canyon and Alice Springs, and can be booked online or through the Voyages Travel Centre. For drivers, the resort puts Alice Springs 450 kilometres away, about four and a half hours on sealed roads, and Kings Canyon 306 kilometres away, about three and a half hours.

Fruit, plants and Northern Territory biosecurity

The NT Government says uncertified bananas from North Queensland are not allowed into the NT. It also says NT borders are not patrolled, but there are quarantine bins at all airports and the railway station for disposing of fruit from interstate. If you are travelling to the township of Ti Tree, north of Alice Springs, it says you must dispose of any fruit brought from interstate, because Ti Tree and some surrounding properties are fruit fly free zones.

For the Ti Tree rule, the NT Government says quarantine bins for surrendering fruit are placed at Alice Springs Airport and the railway station. The government-run national quarantine website describes the Ti Tree Fruit Fly Exclusion Zone as running from Tennant Creek to Alice Springs, and names capsicum, chilli, tomato, eggplant, cucumber, zucchini and squash among the fruit not to take into it.

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park passes

Parks Australia says you need a park pass for Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, and children and teenagers under 18 go free. Buy the pass online through Parks Australia and print it or save it to your phone; at the entry station, use the left-hand lane and scan the code on your pass to open the gate. If you cannot buy one online, you can pick one up at the entry station on your way into the park.

The pass covers Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park only: Kakadu National Park needs its own pass, and the NT's other national parks are managed by the NT Government. Parks Australia says an additional permit may be needed for commercial activities inside the park or for visiting Aboriginal land outside it. Its booking page says this is Anangu land, and that part of the fee goes back to Anangu traditional owners to support the community.

Heat and safety in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park

Parks Australia says temperatures in the park regularly reach 30 degrees Celsius or more and can exceed 40 degrees during summer. It advises walking only in the cooler parts of the day, avoiding the hottest period between 2.30 pm and 6.30 pm, and in summer strongly recommends not walking after 11.00 am. It also advises carrying and drinking at least one litre of water per person per hour, wearing a broad-brimmed hat, sunscreen and sturdy walking shoes, and staying on marked tracks.

Call 000 for emergency services; from a mobile phone, 000 and 112 both work. Parks Australia says there are emergency radios on most walks in the park, and asks walkers to keep off any track closed because of the heat.
