Checked baggage included with the fares we recorded: 15–20 kg, varying by fare. Airlines sell more; this is what the cheapest fares carried.
Collected between 26 September 2026 and 11 October 2026. Not live — check with the airline before booking.
Jetstar Airways (JQ) is an airline of the Qantas Group, and this page covers its domestic flights within Australia. In Economy, Jetstar sells a Starter fare that includes carry-on baggage, and checked baggage and other extras come with a bundle added to it or are added separately. Jetstar's carry-on rules change for its flights from 2 February 2027, so the date you fly decides which allowance applies.
In Melbourne, Jetstar flies from two separate airports, Melbourne Airport (MEL) and Avalon Airport (AVV), and this site's Melbourne route pages cover both. Jetstar asks travellers to check the itinerary for the departure terminal.
Jetstar says some of its domestic flights leave from international terminals, so confirm the departure terminal on your itinerary.
At Sydney Airport (SYD), the operator's page on its Terminal 2 (T2) upgrade places Jetstar in T2. As of October 2026, Jetstar's travel alerts say the T2 upgrade is expected to finish by late 2026, and that check-in and bag drop have moved temporarily, about a one-minute walk away. Jetstar recommends checking in online.
At Melbourne Airport, the airport operator's T4 guide and Jetstar's own guide both place Jetstar's domestic check-in and bag collection in Terminal 4 (T4). Check-in and bag drop are on the ground floor, and Jetstar's guide describes smart security lanes where laptops can stay in bags.
Avalon Airport is a separate airport, and its operator lists Jetstar as the one airline there, flying from Avalon since 2004. The operator puts Avalon about 15 kilometres from Geelong and about 45 minutes from Melbourne's central business district.
As of October 2026, Jetstar's travel alerts say the domestic terminal upgrades at Brisbane Airport (BNE) are expected to finish by the end of 2026. Until then, domestic check-in and bag drop run from temporary facilities outside the terminal at Ground level, and the new bag-tag kiosks print bag tags but cannot check you in or print a boarding pass. The alerts also say new security screening points are in use in both terminals.
All of Jetstar's domestic flights at Perth Airport (PER) have operated from Terminal 2 since 2 September 2024.
As of October 2026, Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY) is being redeveloped, and Jetstar's travel alerts say the work is expected to finish in 2027. The alerts also say that from March 2026 some check-in desks are being replaced by kiosks, and Jetstar recommends checking in online through its app.
Jetstar's economy options are the Starter fare and the Starter Plus, Flex and Flex Plus bundles, which are added to a Starter fare. For the Starter fare, Jetstar's economy page lists carry-on baggage, and extras can be added individually. Checked baggage is not included in the Starter fare, and meals, changes and Qantas Points are not among its listed inclusions.
| Bundle | Checked baggage | Seat selection | Changes and cancellation | Qantas Points and Status Credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter Plus | 20 kg | Standard seat | Time, date and passenger name changes for a fee plus any fare difference, made before the flight opens for airport check-in; no change of origin or destination; the fare is non-refundable except in certain circumstances | Not earned on flights within Australia |
| Flex | Not included | Standard or upfront seat | Same-day changes to the same origin and destination up to the Change Deadline; other time and date changes, paying any fare difference, made before the flight opens for airport check-in; no change of origin or destination; a voucher (not cash) if you cancel before the Change Deadline | Earned at the Qantas Economy rate |
| Flex Plus | 20 kg | Standard, upfront or extra legroom seat | Permitted changes by the Change Deadline, paying any fare difference; a voucher if you cancel before the Change Deadline | Earned at the Qantas Flexible Economy Rate |
Starter Plus includes a meal, snack or in-flight voucher, and Flex Plus includes food and drink. On Flex, food and drink are included only on long-haul international and New Zealand domestic flights. Jetstar says the Flex bundle is available on selected routes.
Jetstar's Starter Plus and Flex rules are for bundles bought or added on or after 4 June 2024. Its economy page says inclusions differ for bookings made before and after that date, and may differ for bookings made through a travel agent or another airline. The Change Deadline in the table is Jetstar's change deadline for the booking.
Club Jetstar is Jetstar's annual membership program, and Qantas Frequent Flyer Extra is an add-on to it that earns bonus Qantas Points and Status Credits on eligible Jetstar flights booked on jetstar.com or the Jetstar app.
Online check-in opens 48 hours before departure. As of October 2026, Jetstar's travel alerts for Brisbane Airport and Sunshine Coast Airport say check-in and bag drop close 40 minutes before domestic flights. Check-in cannot be done at the gate, and Jetstar's conditions of carriage say you may not be allowed to travel and your booking may be cancelled if you miss the check-in deadline. Its bundle fare rules treat a missed check-in as non-refundable except in certain circumstances.
Jetstar says you cannot board if you are not at the boarding gate on time, and its help page on when to get to the airport for domestic flights sets out the gate times.
Jetstar's domestic flights numbered JQ1 to JQ224 leave from an international terminal. For these flights, check-in closes one hour before departure, online check-in is not available, and Jetstar asks you to arrive at least two hours early to allow time for Immigration and Customs. Smart Gates cannot be used for Immigration, you keep your boarding pass, and Jetstar warns that missing the gate may mean losing the fare in full.
Jetstar says passengers, including children and infants, may be asked to show identification (ID) on flights within Australia and New Zealand. It accepts a passport, a driver's licence, an original or certified copy of a birth certificate or citizenship document, a student ID, or an aviation or airport authority-issued ID; photocopies and expired ID are not accepted. Its conditions of carriage say a passenger who cannot prove they are the person named on the booking can be refused carriage.
For a domestic flight that leaves from an international terminal, Jetstar requires valid photographic ID showing your full name. That can be a passport (non-Australian passengers must show one), a driver's licence issued by the Commonwealth or an Australian state or territory, an aviation security card issued by an aircraft operator or an Australian airport operator, or another identifying document issued by the Commonwealth, a state or territory or their authorities. An infant can travel on non-photographic ID, such as a birth certificate, only with an adult who presents photographic ID.
Jetstar's carry-on rules change for Jetstar Airways flights from 2 February 2027, and the date of the flight decides which allowance applies. As of October 2026, Jetstar's carry-on baggage page sets out both, and Jetstar says carry-on baggage is included with all bookings.
In Economy, the allowance is currently two items, one main item and one small item, with a combined limit of 7 kg. It can rise to 14 kg with the +7 kg extra carry-on add-on, which is available on select routes only, or with a bundle that includes it. Jetstar's Flex rules list a 14 kg carry-on allowance on its domestic flights in Australia and New Zealand for Flex bundles bought from 3 April 2025.
In Economy, the standard allowance becomes one underseat bag of up to 40 x 30 x 20 cm. An overhead bag of up to 56 x 36 x 23 cm comes only with Priority Carry-on or a bundle that includes it, and Jetstar says Priority Carry-on is limited and available until sold out.
On every fare, no single carry-on bag may currently weigh more than 10 kg. Jetstar's conditions of carriage say an over-limit cabin bag may be moved to the hold as checked baggage, and fees apply at the airport when the allowance is exceeded, so Jetstar recommends buying extra baggage online beforehand. Knives and sharp objects go in checked baggage, not in the cabin.
Checked baggage currently comes with the Starter Plus and Flex Plus bundles, at 20 kg each. It can also be added when booking, later through Manage booking, or at the airport, and Jetstar recommends adding it before you get to the airport. Each passenger can currently buy up to 40 kg of checked baggage, and no single item can weigh more than 32 kg.
Items longer than one metre in any direction count as oversized, and a handling fee applies on top of the weight allowance, with some exclusions. Some items, such as strollers and wheelchairs, can be checked without counting towards the allowance, within size and weight limits. A passenger who does not travel cannot transfer their unused baggage allowance to another passenger, including one on the same booking.
Jetstar's Conditions of Carriage, dated August 2026, say checked bags must not contain items such as computers, medication, keys, cameras and passports. Check the allowance on your booking before you fly, because it depends on the fare and bundle you bought.
Airports with Jetstar flights recorded on this site are listed below, with the direct domestic routes recorded from each, and each place in the second column links to this site's page for that route. Check Jetstar for its current flights before you plan around a route.
Melbourne Airport and Avalon Airport each have their own row and share this site's Melbourne route pages, so where another row lists Melbourne, check those two rows and your booking for the airport.
The rules on fruit and vegetables carried in from another state differ between these states, and each rule below is that state's own.
For Jetstar flights into Hobart Airport (HBA) and Launceston Airport (LST), Biosecurity Tasmania does not permit fresh fruit and vegetables, including potatoes, fresh herbs, garlic, ginger and onion. They are allowed if cooked, baked, hard frozen, canned, preserved, commercially dried or freeze dried. Fruit and vegetables must be declared and inspected, and on arrival a Biosecurity Tasmania officer inspects some items and makes the final decision.
For Jetstar flights into Western Australia (WA), at Perth Airport and Busselton Margaret River Airport (BQB), Quarantine WA's guidance says that generally no fresh fruit and vegetables are allowed. Exceptions include pineapple, peeled and diced watermelon, peeled onions and garlic, carrot and husked corn on the cob, which must be free of soil, pests, disease, green growth and sprouting, and green salads are not permitted. Quarantine WA's number for interstate rules is 08 9334 1800.
For Jetstar flights into Adelaide Airport (ADL), fruit and vegetables at risk from fruit fly have to be eaten or disposed of before you enter South Australia, and what is allowed depends on the state you fly from. South Australia's fruit fly travel page lists fresh fruit as not allowed from New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory, and tells travellers from Tasmania to call the Fruit Fly Hotline. The hotline is 1300 666 010 and is open 24 hours.
Jetstar's fleet page, with figures dated 31 July 2025, lists these aircraft types for Jetstar Airways: the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, Airbus A321neo (LR), Airbus A320neo, Airbus A320 and Airbus A321. As of that date, Jetstar describes the Boeing 787 as operating on selected Australian domestic routes, with every seat in Economy on those services, and the A320 as carrying passengers within Australia and New Zealand.
Jetstar's own page describes Jetstar Airways as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Qantas Group and as the group's leisure and value-based brand. Its Australian operations began in May 2004, and the company named in its conditions of carriage is Jetstar Airways Pty Ltd.
Jetstar's number for phone bookings is 131 538, and a fee applies to new bookings made by phone. Its contact page offers a contact form by topic, such as a new booking, refunds, delayed or lost baggage and complaints, alongside the Help centre, Manage booking, flight status, check-in and the Jetstar app.
Jetstar flies from both. The airport operator's and Jetstar's T4 guides place Jetstar's domestic flights at Melbourne Airport in Terminal 4, and Avalon Airport is a separate airport whose operator lists Jetstar as its one airline, so check your itinerary for the terminal before you travel.
Checked baggage is not included in the Starter fare. It currently comes with the Starter Plus and Flex Plus bundles at 20 kg, or it can be added when you book, later through Manage booking, or at the airport, and Jetstar recommends adding it before you reach the airport.
For Jetstar Airways flights from 2 February 2027, the standard Economy carry-on allowance is one underseat bag of up to 40 x 30 x 20 cm, and an overhead bag needs Priority Carry-on or a bundle that includes it. Flights before that date currently follow the two-item allowance with a combined 7 kg limit.
For Jetstar domestic flights numbered JQ1 to JQ224, which leave from an international terminal, check-in closes one hour before departure and online check-in is not available. As of October 2026, Jetstar's travel alerts for Brisbane Airport and Sunshine Coast Airport say check-in and bag drop close 40 minutes before domestic flights.
Biosecurity Tasmania does not permit fresh fruit and vegetables unless they are cooked, baked, hard frozen, canned, preserved, commercially dried or freeze dried. Fruit and vegetables must be declared and inspected, and a Biosecurity Tasmania officer inspects some items on arrival and makes the final decision.
