Broome International Airport (BME) is on Macpherson Road in Broome, in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, more than 2,000 km north of Perth. It is owned and run by the Broome International Airport Group, a private company, and the operator says the airport is a short drive from Cable Beach, Chinatown and the town centre.
Direct domestic flights recorded from the airport go to Darwin, Kununurra, Melbourne and Perth, with Qantas, Airnorth and Virgin Australia. Arriving from Darwin or Melbourne means coming into Western Australia from outside the state, and quarantine risk material must be declared to a quarantine inspector on arrival.
The operator describes the terminal as single-level and step-free, with wide walkways and automatic doors. Bags are collected from the baggage carousel inside the arrivals hall, the car hire offices are just outside the Arrivals terminal, and the taxi rank is just outside the arrivals area. Work by Yawuru Karajarri artists on the six seasons of Yawuru country is on show in the Arrivals terminal building.
The Qantas Regional Lounge is airside, just past security screening and close to the departure gates, for eligible departing passengers. The operator's list of eligible passengers includes Qantas Business Class passengers, Qantas Club members and Qantas Gold, Platinum and Platinum One Frequent Flyers, and guest access depends on your tier and airline policy. Check the current guidelines with Qantas before you travel.
Nakamuras Cafe & Bar is open from 7.00 am until the last departing flight, and Nakamuras Gallery & Gifts from 8.00 am to 5 pm, with longer hours in peak season. The cafe offers vegetarian and gluten-free options.
Other facilities on the operator's list are showers, baggage trolleys, parent rooms with fold-down change tables, free wifi and a designated smoking area outside. Luggage lockers stand just outside the terminal in the 2-hour short-term car park: they take card payment only, hold bags for up to 7 days, and cannot store oversized items such as surfboards, swags or bikes. For lost property, contact the airport's administration team, and for medical help, speak to a member of the airport team or call 000 in an emergency.
The operator lists accessible toilets, accessible parking bays near the entrance and step-free access, and says accredited assistance animals are welcome. Wheelchair assistance is arranged through your airline, at the time of booking or at least 48 hours before the flight.
The operator advises arriving at least 90 minutes before a domestic flight, which is when check-in opens. All departing passengers, including those on domestic flights, go through security screening before entering the departure lounge, and anyone who chooses not to be screened cannot enter the departure area or board. Screening can include X-ray checks of carry-on bags, body scanning, a walk-through or hand-held metal detector, and random explosive trace detection.
Prohibited items include knives, scissors and anything with a sharp edge, pointed items such as knitting needles and corkscrews, flammable liquids and gases, and other hazardous materials; some may be allowed in checked baggage, depending on the airline. The operator points to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority's website for the full list. Baby formula, breast milk and medication are allowed in reasonable quantities if declared at screening, and a private screening area can be requested.
The drop-off zone is right outside the Departures terminal, with a strict 2-minute limit, and vehicles must not be left unattended. For pick-ups, use the car park in front of the terminal, where the first 30 minutes are free.
The short-term car park cannot take vehicles taller than 2.7 metres. Long-term parking is a short walk from the terminal, there is an unsealed oversize and overflow car park, and 6-month and 12-month season passes are available to individuals.
The car park gates take Mastercard and Visa credit and debit cards, including digital cards such as Apple Pay, and you use the same card on entry and exit. You can also take a ticket at the entry terminal and pay at the pay station or at an exit terminal. Current rates are on the operator's parking page.
The taxi rank is just outside the arrivals area, with contact numbers on signs at the rank, and some local taxi services take bookings by phone rather than through an app. The operator says taxi and other private transport availability may be limited compared with bigger cities, so waits can vary. Rideshare pick-up zones are signed.
Local operators run pre-booked transfers, scheduled shuttles to major hotels, private transfers and group charters, and many hotels offer transfers of their own, which often need booking ahead and may carry a fee. The operator advises booking a shuttle in advance in the peak travel months of April to October, and checking shuttle availability ahead if your flight lands late.
Car hire companies on the operator's list include Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Thrifty, and car hire offices are just outside the Arrivals terminal. The operator advises booking ahead, especially in the peak travel season of April to October.
Darwin is in the Northern Territory and Melbourne is in Victoria, so arriving from either brings you into Western Australia from another part of Australia. Western Australia's Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) enforces the state's biosecurity laws, and under regulated entry conditions, quarantine risk material must be declared on arrival in Western Australia. DPIRD's advice for arrivals by air is to declare any item you are unsure about to a quarantine inspector.
DPIRD's list for travellers says the fruit and vegetables it permits must be free of sprouting green growth, soil, pests and disease, that honey is prohibited unless certified on a Health Certificate, and that raw walnuts in shell are not permitted. It also asks travellers to take care with shoes and boots that might carry soil. Check the full list on DPIRD's page on what you can bring into Western Australia before you fly, as the rules can change.
Perth and Kununurra are in Western Australia, so a journey from either to Broome stays inside the state. A Queensland fruit fly quarantine area covers the area within a 15-kilometre radius of the intersection of South Terrace and Sandgate Street, South Perth. The notice in the Government Gazette of 17 April 2026 that declared it restricts moving fruit and host plants out of the area to other parts of Western Australia, with rules that differ between its two zones.
A notice in the Government Gazette of 22 September 2026 extended the area until 31 March 2027. DPIRD also sets conditions on moving some fruit, vegetables, plants and soil from one part of Western Australia to another, including from around Kununurra. Check DPIRD's current requirements before carrying produce or plants from Perth or Kununurra.

Broome, Kununurra and Perth are in Western Australia and Darwin is in the Northern Territory, and neither observes daylight saving. Melbourne is in Victoria, which does, as do New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory; Queensland does not.
The operator says the airport has been in use since 1921, when it was set up to serve the Perth-Darwin air link, and that it was a wartime base attacked by Japanese aircraft in March 1942.
An operator news post dated 13 October 2025 reports the upgrade of the main aircraft parking apron complete, with pavement expansion, improved drainage, upgraded lighting and the installation of jet blasting screening, all carried out by local Broome contractors. In February 2026 the operator reported reaching Level 3+ in the Airport Carbon Accreditation program, and said it was the first regional airport in Western Australia to reach carbon neutrality for its direct operational emissions. Its masterplan priorities include a more spacious terminal and upgraded runways and taxiways.
Tourism Western Australia names Cable Beach, a 22-kilometre stretch of coastline, and Gantheaume Point, with its ancient dinosaur footprints, among Broome's attractions. It also lists Roebuck Bay and the Staircase to the Moon, seen on certain dates when the full moon coincides with the low tide, along with the town's pearling history and the pearl showrooms of Chinatown. Aboriginal art galleries, Yawuru-guided experiences and the Shinju Matsuri festival are on its list as well.
Bureau of Meteorology averages for Broome show the most rain from December to March, peaking in January and February, and the least from July to October. The operator calls April to October the peak travel season.
The Broome International Airport Group, a private company, owns and operates the airport.
The operator advises arriving at least 90 minutes before a domestic flight, which is when check-in opens. Every departing passenger goes through security screening before entering the departure lounge.
Yes. A Qantas Regional Lounge is airside, just past security screening, for eligible departing passengers. Check the current guidelines and your eligibility with Qantas before you travel.
It depends where you travel from, and the rules are Western Australia's: if you arrive from Darwin or Melbourne, quarantine risk material must be declared to a quarantine inspector on arrival, and DPIRD's list sets out which fruit, vegetables and other food may be brought in. A Queensland fruit fly quarantine area around South Perth runs until 31 March 2027, with conditions on moving host fruit and plants out of the area to other parts of Western Australia. Check DPIRD's current requirements before you fly.
From the airport you can use the taxi rank outside the arrivals area, the signed rideshare pick-up zones, a pre-booked transfer, a scheduled shuttle to major hotels, a hotel transfer or a hire car. The airport is a short drive from Cable Beach, Chinatown and the town centre.
No. Broome is in Western Australia, which does not observe daylight saving.
This site's schedule records show Airnorth to Darwin and Kununurra, Qantas to Melbourne and Perth, and Virgin Australia to Perth.
