East Kimberley Regional Airport (KNX) serves Kununurra, in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, and is run by the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley, which also manages the airport at Wyndham. The Shire describes it as a certified aerodrome and a security control airport, used by regular passenger services as well as charter and private flights. Virgin Australia's guide to the airport calls it Kununurra Airport.
Direct domestic flights recorded from the airport go to Broome, Darwin and Perth, with Airnorth and Virgin Australia. Kununurra has a fruit rule of its own: from 1 April to 30 November each year, uncertified citrus and stone fruit may not be brought into the Ord River Irrigation Area, which includes the town.
The Shire says the terminal building has a cafe, the Boab Lounge, which serves refreshments and has a licensed area. It also says the terminal has hire car facilities during the times of regular passenger flights.
The passenger terminal was completed in 2011. The Shire's 2017 masterplan for the airport describes a check-in hall, car hire desks, toilets with showers and a baby change room, a passenger security screening area and a departure lounge.
The Shire lists Northern Air Services for check-in and baggage services at the airport. Virgin Australia's guide says its counters are staffed from 90 minutes before a flight until 30 minutes after it, and places the baggage carousels in the arrivals hall, and Baggage Services in the arrivals hall on the ground floor. The same guide mentions accessible toilets and says guests who need help can be escorted to and from the gates.
East Kimberley Regional Airport is a security control airport, and the masterplan describes screening for passengers and checked baggage. Check the baggage allowance, the check-in time and what you may carry on board with your airline before you fly.
Kununurra is in the Ord River Irrigation Area (ORIA), and under Western Australia's Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) rules, citrus and stone fruit may not be brought into the ORIA from 1 April to 30 November each year unless certified. The rule is meant to reduce the risk of bringing Mediterranean fruit fly into the area, and DPIRD says the pest is present in Broome and Derby but absent from the ORIA. The rule is worded around fruit brought into the ORIA and names no place of origin, so it covers a flight from Perth or Broome as well as one from Darwin.
A flight from Darwin also brings you into Western Australia from the Northern Territory, and DPIRD's rule is that quarantine risk material must be declared to a quarantine inspector on arrival into the state. Its advice for travellers arriving in Western Australia by air is to declare any item they are unsure about. DPIRD's page on what you can bring into Western Australia lists the fruit, vegetables and other food that may be brought in.
Western Australia's rules also cover what leaves the area, and banana plants and parts of them (not the fruit) and soil may not be taken from within 50 km of the Kununurra Post Office to other parts of Western Australia, apart from soil samples for laboratory analysis. Uncertified cut flowers, foliage and leafy vegetables may not be taken from the ORIA to other parts of Western Australia. Check DPIRD's current conditions before you fly, as these rules can change.
The airport is on the Victoria Highway, and the Shire's 2017 masterplan puts Kununurra town about 4 km east of it. The Shire's airport contacts include a taxi service and car hire companies.
The masterplan describes car parks next to the terminal, and the Shire's airport page has a map of the car parking zones. For travel, car hire, charter and flight services, the Shire points visitors to the Kununurra Visitor Centre.

Airnorth's Kununurra page links to booking, web check-in and special assistance on its website, and says web check-in is available 24 hours before scheduled departure.
Kununurra, Broome and Perth are in Western Australia and Darwin is in the Northern Territory, and neither observes daylight saving. Queensland does not either; New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory do.
In May 2024 the Shire announced funding for stage 2 of its upgrades to the airport: an extension of the runway and associated infrastructure. It said the longer runway was expected to let larger Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 aircraft operate at full capacity.
As of late September 2026, the Western Australian Government's project page says construction, which started in early 2025, is complete, and that the extension will be operational subject to final approvals.
Tourism Western Australia lists Lake Argyle, the Ord River (with boat, fishing and canoe tours), Ivanhoe Crossing and Mirima National Park among the places to see around Kununurra. It also names the Gibb River Road, which runs 660 km between Kununurra and Derby.
The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) puts Purnululu National Park, which is World Heritage listed, 304 km from Kununurra by road, with access for high clearance four-wheel drive vehicles. DBCA lists scenic flights among the park's activities, and says the park generally closes for the wet season.
Most of Kununurra's rain falls in the wet season, going by Bureau of Meteorology averages for the Kununurra Aero weather station. The Kununurra Visitor Centre says road access and tours are limited in the wet.
