Hobart Airport (HBA) is at Cambridge, which is 17 kilometres, or a 15-minute drive, from the city of Hobart along a dual-lane highway. The terminal usually opens at 4.00am and closes at 10:30pm, and the airport is unable to accommodate travellers overnight in the terminal. The airport company is Hobart International Airport Pty Ltd.
Flights into Hobart arrive under Tasmania's biosecurity rules, and Biosecurity Tasmania does not permit fresh fruit and vegetables. Leave fresh produce at home, or dispose of it or declare it on arrival: Hobart Airport's biosecurity page says goods not permitted in Tasmania go in the biosecurity bins inside the terminal building.
The airlines recorded on direct domestic flights from Hobart Airport include Link Airways, Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin Australia. Direct domestic flights recorded from Hobart go to these destinations, with the airlines recorded on each:
| Destination | Airport | Airlines recorded |
|---|---|---|
| Adelaide | Adelaide Airport (ADL) | Jetstar |
| Brisbane | Brisbane Airport (BNE) | Jetstar, Qantas, Virgin Australia |
| Canberra | Canberra Airport (CBR) | Link Airways, Virgin Australia |
| Gold Coast | Gold Coast Airport (OOL) | Jetstar |
| Melbourne | Melbourne Airport (MEL) | Jetstar, Qantas, Virgin Australia |
| Perth | Perth Airport (PER) | Qantas, Virgin Australia |
| Sydney | Sydney Airport (SYD) | Jetstar, Qantas, Virgin Australia |
Hobart Airport says that when you leave the aircraft you will be asked to dispose of or declare any goods that are not permitted in Tasmania, and that these go in the biosecurity bins inside the terminal building. It says a Biosecurity Tasmania officer and a detector dog will greet you and inspect all hand and checked luggage. The airport's biosecurity page also reminds travellers of the general biosecurity duty, the legal obligation to help keep Tasmania free from pests, weeds and diseases.
Biosecurity Tasmania is part of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania. It asks travellers to leave fresh food and other restricted items at home, or to dispose of or declare them on arrival, and it says the officer makes the final decision about whether an item is allowed into Tasmania. If you are in any doubt, its advice is to leave risk items at home, and its phone number is 1300 368 550.
Fresh fruit and vegetables are not permitted entry, including potatoes, fresh herbs, garlic, ginger and onion. Biosecurity Tasmania's food page lists fresh fruit and vegetables as a category you declare, with inspection required, and it allows fruit and vegetables that are cooked, baked, hard frozen, canned, preserved, commercially dried or freeze dried, or cooked and then dehydrated at home. Fruit and vegetables dehydrated at home from the raw state are not permitted.
The other food rules on Biosecurity Tasmania's food page include these, and each item in the table is declared:
| Food | Biosecurity Tasmania's rule |
|---|---|
| Meat | Allowed if killed in Australia for personal consumption or commercially produced. Inspected if requested. |
| Honey | Allowed if commercially filtered to a maximum 0.42 mm pore size and free of wax pieces and bee bits. Unfiltered honey is not permitted unless it was commercially produced in Tasmania and is in its original, unopened and sealed packaging. |
| Honeycomb | Not permitted unless produced in Tasmania. |
| Processed food, including nuts, edible seeds and dairy | Allowed if it is identifiable, you cannot grow plants from it, and it is clean and free of bugs, soil or diseases. |
| Fish and seafood | Allowed if the species is identifiable and dead and the packaging is labelled with its scientific and common names. Fish on the Restricted Fish List, including salmon and trout, may be brought in only if it meets the requirements in Biosecurity Tasmania's Animal Biosecurity Manual. Canned fish is allowed, and abalone is not permitted, dead or alive. |
Household pot plants count as nursery stock: they are declared and inspected, and Biosecurity Tasmania says a Notice of Intention to Import Plant/Plant Products form should be submitted 24 hours before you arrive. Cut flowers and ornamental foliage, fresh or dried, are declared with the same form 24 hours ahead. Biosecurity Tasmania does not permit flowers or foliage from a state or territory with Tomato Potato Psyllid, and it names those as Western Australia and Victoria.
The 4.00am to 10:30pm hours are adjusted to suit arriving and departing flights where necessary. Check-in desks and self-service kiosks are in the middle of the terminal building.
Depending on the flight, you arrive through Gate 1 into the Arrivals area, or through Gates 2 to 9 in the Departures area. The airport's flights page shows which gate your flight arrives through and which baggage carousel to use, and there are information screens inside the terminal building. For oversized baggage, contact your airline: the oversized baggage drop-off is in Arrivals.
The airport's food and drink page names Cafe Outbound near Gate 8 in Departures, Cafe Marketplace with indoor and outdoor seating, Coal River Farm Cafe and Bar, and York Street Bar. In Departures, Purely Tasmania sells Tasmanian crafted wares, spirits, wine and gifts and has an in-store tasting bar, and Relay sells news, personal hygiene and basic medicinal products.
Everyone is screened at Hobart Airport before boarding a flight, under Australian Government regulations, and the airport says body scanner screening is mandatory for all travellers entering its secure areas.
Before you reach the screening point, take everything out of your pockets and put it in your bag. At the front of the queue, put any remaining pocket items in the tray, with bulky outer items such as coats, belts, scarves and hats in the tray too. The airport's steps say laptops, tablets, other electronic devices and toiletries stay in your bag.
Terminal expansion works began in July 2024, and the airport keeps operating while they run. The plan doubles the departures area with more seating, and adds a new arrivals corridor with central access to baggage reclaim, more screening lanes and body scanners, more boarding gates, new food and retail outlets, and a forecourt landscaped with native Tasmanian plants. The airport's project page lists these stages:
The airport's key dates page lists the renovation of the existing boarding gates as in progress, and plans for all new areas of the expanded terminal to open in 2027, though Pulse Tasmania reported in July 2026 that the full expansion is due to be completed in early 2028. While the renovation of the existing boarding gates is in progress, you may board from a temporary gate.
Ways to reach Hobart Airport include a shuttle bus, taxis, rental cars and your own vehicle, and Uber also operates there.
SkyBus runs the Hobart Express between the airport and the city all year round, and the airport says it meets major scheduled flights seven days a week. The average trip is 30 minutes, and the bus stops outside the arrivals hall forecourt at Gate 1, to the right of the yellow bus shelter. It is a turn up and go service, so bookings are not necessary.
The city stops include Campbell Street opposite Hotel Grand Chancellor, Brooke Street Pier on Franklin Wharf, the Tasmania Travel & Information Centre on Elizabeth Street, Double Tree by Hilton Hobart at 179 Macquarie Street, and the RACV/RACT Hobart Apartments at 119 Collins Street. SkyBus's coaches have onboard luggage storage and free WiFi.
You can buy a ticket on the SkyBus website or the SkyBus App. At the airport you can buy a ticket from the e-kiosks inside the terminal near the baggage carousels, or from the driver when you board.
Taxis wait in the rank directly out the front of the terminal building, and you can ask the kerbside attendants for a mini-van or special taxi. Uber picks up from the designated pick-up area in the commercial lane, and drops off in the commercial lane too.
Rental companies have offices in the forecourt in front of the terminal, where new car rental offices opened in October 2025. Other rental companies also serve the airport, so check where yours collects before you land.
The free drop-off and pick-up lane outside the terminal is for setting down and picking up passengers only. Under Australian Government security requirements a vehicle dropping off passengers must be attended at all times, and an unattended vehicle faces an immediate fine and towing. To wait for a passenger, use the Long Term car park, where the first 15 minutes are free.
The on-site car parks are Valet, Premium, Short Term, Long Term and Saver, and the walking distances to the terminal are:
Parking booked online uses licence plate recognition. If you drive up, take a ticket at the entry and pay at the exit gate by card, or at the pay station by card or cash.
Wheelchairs are arranged through your airline, and so is assistance inside the terminal or onto a flight. For other assistance at the airport, email the airport team a minimum of five business days in advance.
Bays for vehicles displaying a disability parking permit are in the drop-off and pick-up lane. The terminal has wheelchair accessible toilets, a Changing Places facility in Arrivals and assistance animal relief facilities.
Tasmania observes daylight saving, as do New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory, while Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not. If your flight goes to or from a state or territory that does not observe daylight saving, check the local time at the other end.
