Isaac Regional Council says Moranbah was created in 1971 by the Utah Development Company Ltd, which owned Goonyella Mine and later Peak Downs Mine, as a town for miners and their families. Moranbah is now the largest community in the Isaac region, which lies in the Bowen Basin, and mining is among the region's top industries of employment. The council describes part of the region's population as temporary: people who fly in and fly out, or drive in and drive out.
The Moranbah Miners' Memorial is in Town Square Park, where families and workmates gather on the first Friday of November to remember coal miners. The Big Red Rhino Bucket, bought from Peak Downs Mine, stands at the town entrance.
Queensland's tourism body says the Grosvenor Complex in the Town Square houses the library, the Coalface Art Gallery and Tourist Visitor Information.
